The Other Sauer

Kurt Sauer, brother of Michael Sauer will be an ufa. Sather did have intrest before he went to sign with the Ducks. Any chance of Sather signing him since we have his brother. Sauer is a defensive dman with size that we can use. He is only 27 years old. He was a +17 on the Avs. hed be cheaper than orpik i would think. orpik will get overpaid like sarich was last year.

Only if we can trade him for the rights to Karel Rachunek!

In all seriousness, I don't think Sather's plan is to target brothers of players in the organization... Doubt he would go after Joel Lundqvist.... That's an impressive +/- for Sauer but I don't see enough of the Avs play to have a solid impression of him... Does anyone on here see the Avs play regularly? Doubt it.

I don't really see the point, other than he is brothers with Mike. We have guys that can do the same job who are younger and cheaper, IMO.

true but we need some leadership for our young dman. if we let all the ufa dman leave we need at least 2 to replace them. sauer would be a good fit. id rather spend the money throughout the team, then invest alot into one player like redden who id take. we did that last year with gomez and drury. now we gotta resign avery along with rfa and whatever ufa like jagr and straka if brought back. shanny if he takes a paycut like 2 mil a year then bonus i can deal with that but no more. we need to upgrade our toughness on d and size on the wings.

I think Mike probably has the chance to be better than Kurt..I don't see the need for this at all.

Our biggest problem the last few seasons has been going with a Defense by committee. Not having that big time stud defenseman has hurt us, IMO. I'm all for throwing big money at a top pairing, 30 mins-a-game defenseman, but Redden is not the answer.

He's an average depth defenseman, but not the kind of guy we need to actively pursue. Maybe in a few years a Sauer-Sauer shutdown/3rd pairing could be worth a try though.

I don't think it's necessarily a bad idea though depending on the contract. He is a legit NHL d-man--and not a penalty taking machine. I'd rather have someone like him on the 3rd pairing than Strudwick or Backman.

overpaid? he is making 700K right now, so he will probably reach the like 2mill max per year? Mara makes 3mil and backman will earn the same next year. That my friends is overpaid!

I do see the Avalanche on a semi-regular basis and Kurt is what he is -- a solid NHL veteran player who has probably found his niche as a third pair defenseman. Not as big a hitter as brother Mike (or Orpik) is reputed to be but a nice safe sound player. At the right price, why not?

he is safer and better defensively than backcrap and prolly cheaper. and he actually sticks up for teammates when he has too.

and he is a big d-man that can hit, a veteran, and a great 3rd pairing guy....his d can offset backmans chances. and relatively cheap, leaving enough cash to go after a true top pairing to play with staal next season.

Remember, even a broken clock is right twice a day. And BTW, I liked his Danny Markov suggestion a lot.

i think you mean even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and again...and really i can name 500 players and it would impossible for one or two of them not to be decent suggestions.

and i still think this is a bad suggestion.

tuts, staal, girardi, backman is who we have. bring up hutch, add smith and a true 1st pairing d man, and we are set....add more pp with hutch, add more grit with smith, and more veteran leadership, and then a true #1 and we are already more solid back there
