Tuomo Ruutu

He's a RFA this year. Great player, explosive and is able to park himself infront of the net. A hard checker... Everything positive about this guy.. Hes getting around 2.5 mil right now, so maybe 3.75 mil to win him over?.. Not bad.. I'd choose him over Ryder seeing he's more of a two way player.. Any thoughts?

Thats what we need on this team.

As a UFA I'd be interested... I wouldn't look to over-pay him and give up top picks though. Right now he's a third line winger. I'm not giving out over 3 million to him, and losing a first round pick...

You wouldn't have to lose a pick for him. Hes a RFA. Just make him an offer.

Maybe I'm missing something...

Unrestricted Free Agent... just make an offer....

Restricted free agent... give up picks according to what the salary is... A good example would be Dustin Penner being signed away by Edmonton last year...

Not to mention - I like Ruutu, but 3 million in a salary cap world is way too much. Right now he's a third line winger, and he's had injury problems. Maybe he could raise his game and become a second liner but the cost makes the risk way greater than the award... PASS.

Rangers would either have to make a deal for his rights or pay compensation in draft picks according to the formula for signing him as an RFA. There's no way around that. If they want him trading for him would seem to be the best way to go.

Funny, I was just thinking about him today. I think next year will be pivotal for his career. Is Ruutu the guy who scored that amazing goal against Canada in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey? Is he the guy who crushes opposing players with open-ice hits? Can he stay healthy for a whole season? Will he disappear off the scoring charts again?

The potential upside to Ruutu is huge: he's had stretches where he's looked like a bonafide first-liner, but his downside is essentially to be another bottom-six banger at this point.

Ruutu was the guy I was hoping would fall to us in 2001. But Chicago picked him 2 picks ahead of us, and we've ended up with Blackburn. Which still made me happy. It's just a freak accident has killed his career.

R stands for RESTRICTED which means that there's certain restrictions attached to his free-agenecy.

Yes he can negotiate with anyone, but any signing a contract means that his current team has to be paid compensation for losing his services.

You can't "Just make an offer" it doesn't work that way

So you'd take Tuomo Ruutu over Eric Cole? One injury prone player vs another player who is "injury prone" because someone broke the guys neck. Ya. I get it now.

Another player who never reached his potential, and probably never will.

i highly doubt the rangers will be chasing after any RFA's. Unlike Edmonton we don't have to go that route to get guys to sign here.

You do if you want better, younger guys. That said, Ruutu is not that guy.

As a UFA I'd take a shot at the right price, but he is so injury prone. That being said, I am a fan of his game. I caught one of the Hurricanes' games after the deadline and he was a beast. But he doesn't do it often enough when he's sideline so much.

Amount Compensation Due
$773,442 or less None
$773,442 - $1,171,882 3rd round pick
$1,171,882 - $2,343,764 2nd round pick
$2,343,764 - $3,515,645 1st and 3rd round pick
$3,515,645 - $4,687,527 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round pick
$4,687,527 - $5,859,412 Two 1st's, one 2nd, one 3rd round pick
$5,859,412 or more Four 1st round picks

At 3.75 he would cost a 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounder. No way he his worth that much.

these scales change by year. this offseason that amount would probably fall to the 1st and 3rd. The new scale will come out when the new cap comes out.

It's the only thing we have to base estimations upon for now. Even if it does get adjusted to a 1st and a 3rd rounder theres no way IMO Ruutu is worth that.

In 4 seasons in the NHL, he's missed a possible 78 games. While not good, it was mainly due to the 06 season, in which he missed 67 of those 78 games.

He's too much of a health risk, and I don't think he'll realize his potential.

However, at the right price, I'd take him. He's what this team needs.

Definitely not worth a 1st at this point, and if that's what it's going to take, I'll pass.
