Jagr/Rangers to Begin Contract Negotiations Next Week -- Sather after Joni Pitkanen

Quote:
Kevin Lowe wasn't selling when Rangers inquired at deadline about Edmonton's puck-rushing and power playable defenseman Joni Pitkanen, but Sather is expected to go back after the 24-year-old restricted free agent who earned $2.4M last year.

He'd look great paired with say Tyutin.

Except I as an Edmonton fan would probably want Tyutin in exchange (not to be difficult; we'd need someone to replace Joni's minutes).

Redden is probably a more realistic target since I understand why you wouldn't be able to trade an established D in exchange for Pitkanen.

Brooks forgot to add Larry Kelly wants $4-$6 million per for Pitkanen.

Did you read the entire column by Brooks?Robert Lang?please

Acquire another center to play with Jagr?

What's wrong with Brandon Dubinsky? This is the same NY media which screams and yells about a team not giving a young guy a chance and then turns around advocates trading a 40 year old center to drive with Jagr to the Rangers practice facility.

The Rangers made a mistake in not retaining Michael Nylander?

Larry turns into Eklund this time of year.

The Rangers do not need Lang at all. I'm not sure any team does. Dubinsky is doing just fine.

Edmonton might have some interest in Prucha. A deal would certainly mean us giving up more than Petr but during the lockout season Ales Hemsky and Prucha played on the same line--at least in the playoffs and led their team to Czech. elite championships. They were 1 and 2 in scoring in those playoffs if I remember. OTOH neither of them are big, strong guys and the Oilers might not think that that combo in the NHL would work.

On signing Jagr--hopefully that happens but I'd stay away from Straka (unless he signed real cheap) and would not overpay for Roszival.

Drury is not the kind of player that carries a team offensively. He is a clutch scorer and an excellent support player. He does not take over games. So despite the huge contract Sather gave him it's best not to let our expectations get out of hand.

The good news (if you're not Philadelphia) is that cap issues might well prevent the Flyers from matching an offer sheet to imposing 23-year-old power forward Jeff Carter.
The good news is that compensation for a contract worth up to approximately $5.2M per is only one No. 1, one No. 2 and one No. 3, surely an equitable price to pay if you're a team a) drafting in the bottom half of the pool; b) that doesn't draft well; or, c) both, meaning you're the Devils.
Haha

Makes sense, now i can see why Philly wanted Kaberle for Carter and pick..

Priority one

Good article, raises some intresting questions on the future of the Rangers. Drury almost seems like the odd man out.

Giving Lowe's history, if Pitkanen's coming east, Tyutin's in the deal going to Edmonton.

I could live with that. Tyutin and a pick for Pitkanen?

I was thinking Tyutin and either Dawes or Prucha.

If Jags comes back with Straka and Roszival, I don't see this team being any better than it was this season. We still won't have depth and Gomer is still without a sniper.

totally agree with you.

Bring Jagr back, but also replace Straka and Roszival with Malone, Orpik and Ryder (if possible)

Better depth at forward and the hard knocking defenceman in Orpik

Sorry, but those three guys are not going to replace what Roz and Straka bring the team. Malone and Ryder are getting way too much love on this board. Orpik is good, but he's not the top pairing D that's needed. If Roz goes, then Pitkanen is the ideal replacement. He's better, actually.

Following the flow of this thread, I'd be absolutely thrilled if Pitkanen and Carter made their way into town.

Thank freaking god

According to Sam,

Quote:
Larry Brooks reports that Jaromir Jagr and the Rangers are about to enter preliminary stages of contract negotiations, with both sides making clear they want to extend their relationship for at least another year.
I couldn't imagine the team without Jagr. I don't know for me, his name is kinda synonymous with the Rangers. While everyone was yelling trade, there was something about him that I just couldn't bare to see him leave this organization. His play towards the end of the season / playoffs was phenomenal and is fact to the matter than he can still play like he once did.

I really hope they can get a deal goin with Straka too. I know his scoring touch isn't there, but hes one of the few who plays 110% every shift. The guy never gives up and is fast, gets lots of scoring chances and is great on the penalty kill.

Trading Tyutin who is signed to a very good deal at under $3 million in a deal for Pitkanen who wants major dollars is beyond stupid.

Quote:
They held initial dialogue last December, at which time Pitkanen and his agent Larry Kelly, were shooting for the moon. The two sides were so far apart they decided to let things sit for a few months
Quote:
Kelly believes his guy rates with some of the best defencemen in the NHL, and should be paid accordingly (in excess of $5 million).

Pitkanen could be that player one day, but isn't yet, and hasn't shown the ability to be an 80-game, 25-minute a night workhorse, so Edmonton is understandably reluctant to make him their second highest paid player

Agree.

I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility that Marc Staal will eventually be an offensive weapon.

Just looked up Larry Robinson's stats and his numbers picked up as he matured:

Larry Robinson's career hockey statistics at hockeydb.com
http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/players.../00004612.html

Hopefully, Sanguinetti will also add some offense in a year or two.

We need some defensemen who will hit and hit hard.

Rangers are not trading Tyutin for him, that makes no sense Rangers want more defenseman not replacing one for another and then going out and having to get another one... The Rangers would trade Prucha and Picks for him. You have to realize money plays a big part and lowers demands of a player

Pitkanen and Staal
Tyutin and Girardi
Sangi and Orpik

Is a nice core

Agreed. Tyutin was just signed to a deal guys, why would Sather trade him for another Defenseman... Makes no sense.
