This always strikes me when I read the Expos bio on wikipedia.

Quote:
Led by Vladimir Guerrero, the 2003 Expos were part of a spirited seven-team Wild Card hunt. On August 28, they found themselves in a five-way tie for the lead with Philadelphia, Florida, St. Louis, and Houston. However, MLB, led by Bud Selig, in what ESPN's Peter Gammons called "a conflict of interest," decided that it could not afford an extra $50,000 to call up players from its minor leagues to take advantage of MLB's expanded roster limit during September. The budget was some $35 million. This doomed any hopes of reviving the franchise. Minaya later said, "Baseball handed down a decree. They would not be allowed to call up players from the minors on September 1, as it was deemed too expensive. They would have to make do with what they had. "It was a message to the players," Minaya said. "It was a momentum killer." He also stated: "They're a tough group of guys. You cannot ever forget 2003; they were as good as the Marlins, who won the World Series. But nobody knows this because nobody saw Montreal in 2003. What killed us was not getting the call-ups."[37]

Orlando Cabrera, who had been the Expos' shortstop, cited that development as a reason he didn't want to remain with the team.[38]

Fan attendance dropped off, and the Expos went 1215, finishing eight games out of the Wild Card.

50K too much for MLB!? Are you kidding me?! It was planned for the Expos to move and he knew if the Expos would make the playoffs, the fans would come back and some local owner would buy the team. Minaya said iy best, we had as good as a team as the 2003 Marlins who won the World Series...it always frustrates me how MLB never gave a 2nd chance to Montreal.

I love that team. Even though they always seemed to lose.

Good article about Minaya and the Expos from the 2003 season.

The last 7th inning stretch, we can get a ball team back in the future, it might take 20 years, but nothing is impossible.

HUGE EXPOS FAN! God, I miss that team. I'm still bitter over the whole situation. Haven't watched a baseball game in 3 years now.

I think the difference between the Expo's & Jays are that the Expo's were dynamic(If I can coin that phrase) Obviously a team is driven around the city it plays in. Speed & a lot of home grown players(sure they were all Americans, but we drafted & developed them), it was very enjoyable...

The Boyz of summer are greatly missed....

We miss them now but most of us didn't go to games during the dark years and it cost us our team. I know MLB screwed us over more than once (1994 strike when we had the best team in baseball, playing a third of our home games in San Juan and having times where they were 30 days without playing in Montreal and in 2003 when we were tied in the wild card and they wouldn't allow us call-ups) but still the fans really had no interest after 1994 and 10 years later it was over. Obviously Montreal is a baseball city and if a local owner would have built a 35-40K stadium downtown the fans would have been back.

We cant blame the fans. What happend in 1994 was ********.
It totally drew the fans away and it only got worst from there. the more time went by the more you could see baseball screwing montreal and the more the fans went away. We had nomore TV coverage so fans couldnt follow when they didnt have a chance to get to the stadium. the radio is nice and all but nothing compares to actually watching the game.

Personally I made it to 20 to 30 games, every year. When I was younger (7 to 14-15) my dad would bring me. When I was 16 i started going alone with friends. Heck, I even went to a couple of games all alone. I would sit out in the bleachers in left field and enjoy the game.

Those were the days. I remember doing that as well, on nice summer nights. Just grabbed a cheap ticket, sat wherever I pleased and enjoyed a good game of baseball. I can still remember it as if it were yesterday...

Yes those dark years in the end. I also took the Metro to the Stade & watched a few games alone. But you were never alone at the ballpark, there was always somebody near enough to talk about Vlad's stats.

I have to go to the Yankee Stadium AND the Fenway this year, to cure my need of Baseball...

My all-time favourite players for the Expos are:

1. Henry Rodriguez
2. Pedro Martinez
3. Vladimir Guerrero

I used to love going to the Big O and making fun of Braves fans with my brother.

Screw Selig and Loria. I hope they burn in hell.

Honestly guys, every week throughout the year, there's at least day when I think to myself "God I wish we still had the expos"

The way we lost the team pisses me off to no end, it's such a piss off

Honestly, I turn on tsn or rsn when the Jays play, and think "Wouldn't it be amazing if we had a nice stadium downtown, and if we could go watch baseball games on a sunny afternoon and just relax and enjoy everything?"

I feel like a part of the city was forcibly taken away from me

I'd do anything to have the expos back. If by some miracle I ever become a Billionaire, the first thing I'd do is try to get the franchise back in Montreal
