Rather have Orpik who will be 28 next season, than Smith who will be 35 next season.

There's also rumblings that Orpik would like to come to the Rangers.

We could definitely use someone who can actually hit on defense.

Smith is good. Old but still good for 15min per game.

I think he will have a shoulder surgery during off season.

3.5 per, are you out of your mind? the guy is going to be 34 and noticeably regressed as the season went on. he made 2 m per the last three seasons and i'd be surprised if he gets that again.

I wouldn't mind Smith, but not for that money.

Smith would be our nr 6 D. Its a lock that Marc Staal will be even better next year meaning that we will have a 1st pairing that plays atleast 25 mintes, and maybe even more in big games. That means that when it counts, Jason Smith would play around 15 minutes per night.

IMO its just not worth to pay that type of money for a 6th D with no upside.

He'd give us some needed leadership on the back end, but he's slowing down considerably. If he was playing for us, he'd be the 6th d-man most likely. I like him, but we could potentially do better.

I have no idea how hurt he really was this year. His play was less than stellar. How many of you actually watched him play this year? He at this point is a bottom paring dman. Any more minutes and he is useless. I hope the flyers donít resign him unless around 1.5 like your suggesting but donít see it. Hope he does sign with the rangers or devils. His leadership skills in the 1 year with the flyers were not that great imo. He was abused in the playoffs. Will give you everything he has however that is not good enough.

Sure because he knows the Rangers will overpay for him. I have to watch him a little more closely in the Finals vs. Detroit but honestly I think he's been outplayed by Hal Gill.

Hes one of the hardest hitters in the league.

On a team filled with non hitters, he would be a welcome addition. Theres a reason Avery is so vital to this teams success. w/o him were easily one of the softest teams in the league. with him, were a bit better. Orpik would help our softness factor ten fold.

if the rangers could trade backman for a pick i would like to see this on defence

staal-orpik
girardi-tyutin
smith-potter

all solid, big guys who can throw some hits....lthough if i had the option, i would rather trade tyutin for pitkanen or in a deal for someone betetr and move orpik down

staal-JBO/Weber/Suter
girardi-orpik(girardi and orpik would be a very physical duo)
smith-potter

I'm with you there inferno, I've been impressed with Hal Gill's play this post season, but not enough to forget about his play before this post season. I wouldn't be going after him.

I like Jason Smith, but wouldn't rush to sign him.
As for comparing Orpik to Hal Gill, maybe Gill has improved since his Leafs days but I think he is average at best, he wouldn't upgrade the Rangers. I wouldn't compare Orpik to Gill. Gill is pretty slow-footed, and maybe he looks okay on the Penguins, I bet he would look awful on the Rangers. We already have a slow lumbering defenceman (although I realize that Gill at least uses his size) who is hopefully about to ship out of town real soon. The Wings will take advantage of Gill every chance they get.

Who is the ideal non-homegrown defenceman for the Rangers for next season? Lots of smarter people on this board than me...so I don't know, but I would still rather 'overpay' Orpik for less than we would overpay Campbell (just using this as a comparison since his name is so popular in the trade discussions). I like the way he plays a lot.

Orpik is a good choice cuz he is a physical guy. But JM Liles is a possibility. If the Rangers are looking for someone with physical play then Brad Stuart is an option. I would personally love to get Mark Streit. Redden and Campbell have been tossed around this thread too. Theres a couple of good dmen out there but i personally think if the Rangers want a guy who can play offense and is defensively sound, Mark Streit is a good option.
