Well, I just hope this doesn't hurt our chances in the UFA market. Hopefully a) money talks and b) they are able to convince people it was the Canucks lack of skill/injuries last year that caused them to play like crap and cripple players point production.
I assume AV will be coming out with a book anyday now "I taught Therrien all he knows!" and will talk about how amazing the Canucks can be, just like the Penguins.
not too exciting of a read.
It seems as though we've known this for quite some time.
I'm pleased with this move. It's much better than what Colorado just did by promoting Granato to be the head coach.
Also, hopefully some new thinking on the PP will lead to a lack of Byron Ritchie at the point.
It's only one extra year, so it gives Vigneault a bit of security and chance to prove himself and but it's not so long that the Canucks feel obligated to keep him around (for financial reasons) if they decide they want to make a change.
As if there was not already pressure on Gillis to acquire high-end offensive players, there is now.
Essentially Gillis is saying that the team's failures last year were not Vigneault's fault, therefore it was the GM for not giving him the tools to work with.
It would be difficult to justify firing Vigneault in the coming year, unless AV fails to produce with a more talented team. If the Canucks go into the next season with essentially the same roster, Gillis will look like a fool if he fires AV after signing the extension.

Spot on. It definitely does put a lot of pressure on Gillis. I just hope it isn't too much and that he doesn't screw up because of it.
Guess that means Naslund is all but gone. It's been a good run.
I'm not happy with this decision. Unless Gillis drastically improves the forward core which I don't think he can without overpaying severly and trading away every good young prospect the team has. We can pretty much say goodbye to Luongo too in a couple years. And then the Canucks will turn into their early '00 version of themselves.

This is a terrible decision IMO. AV had lost the lockerroom last year. He made several poor player decisions throughout the year and with the amount of quality coaches available right now, this would have been the perfect time to make a change.
