How many actual three-way trades the past 10 years?

Topic is as it reads. I can only think of one: the Bell/Preissing/Havlat deal between SJ/Ottawa/Chicago a couple of years ago. Can anyone think of anything else?

Wasn't there one a couple of years ago that involved the Bruins, Sharks, and Habs?

EDIT: Found it...

23-Jan-03 Montreal Canadiens traded Jeff Hackett to the San Jose Sharks for Niklas Sundstrom and a 3rd round selection in 2004. Then, San Jose Sharks traded Jeff Hackett and Jeff Jillson to the Boston Bruins for Kyle McLaren and a 4th round selection in 2004.

...or does something have to go from the B's to the Habs to make that an official three-way?

Radek Bonk going from Ottawa to Montreal via LA may count, but, I'm not sure if that was really seen as two separate trades or not.

Weren't Redden and Berard involved in a three-way trade somehow in the 90's?

I found another one: Hawks/Wings/Flyers deal from last year involving Williams, Kukkonen, and Calder. Easy for me to forget that one outside of Williams....

I wouldn't consider this a 3-way deal... it's 2 separate deals made by the Sharks.

the Chicago/SJ/Ottawa one was a better example, as all 3 teams were negotiating together at the same time and saw assets moved in the same transaction.

22-Jul-03 Columbus Blue Jackets traded Mike Sillinger and a 2nd round selection in 2004 to the Dallas Stars for Darryl Sydor. Then, Dallas Stars traded Mike Sillinger to the Phoenix Coyotes for Teppo Numminen.

I guess you can classify this as two separate deals, but:

Colorado: RW Claude Lemieux
NY Islanders: LW Wendel Clark
New Jersey: RW Steve Thomas

That wasn't a true 3-way either. Philly to Chicago... Chicago to Detroit. There was no exchange between Philly and Detroit.

A 3-way deal that saw Jeff Jillson go to Buffalo, Curtis Brown go to San Jose, and Brad Boyes and Andy Delmore go to Boston.

most of these trades mentioned were 2 separate transactions... they would be listed by the NHL as 2 transactions.

IMO that shouldn't qualify as a 3-way trade... shouldn't it have to be one transaction involving 3 teams to be classified as an actual 3-way trade??

the majority of trades listed here were one team acquiring assets from another, then in a completely separate trade that didn't include the team they just got assets from, they moved said assets to a 3rd team. To me that looks like 2 transactions, and therefore 2 separate trades??

I guess we should be more concerned with how they are viewed years from now when everyone forgets they were two seperate deals (usually) done on the same day. I think it's safe to think 20 years from now we'll probably think of them as 3-way trades to appease our sanity, so let's just call them 3-way trades since the history of Earth (uhhmmm....the Internet) classifies them as 3-way trades when I look up some of the aforementioned trades. I haven't checked to see how they are classified on the one web log I posted above, yet, as I need to get back to work.

09-Mar-04 In a three-way deal: San Jose Sharks traded Brad Boyes to the Boston Bruins for Jeff Jillson; Then, San Jose Sharks traded Jeff Jillson and a 9th round selection to the Buffalo Sabres for Curtis Brown and Andy Delmore; Then, San Jose Sharks traded Andy Delmore to the Boston Bruins for future considerations.

I'm thinking more about this 3-way trade classification. Disregard everything I said earlier....I think in actuality there has been only one real 3-way trade the past 10 years.

TRADE: Chicago traded Larmer and Bryan Marchment to Hartford in exchange for Eric Weinrich and Patrick Poulin on November 2, 1993. The deal was part of a three-way trade with N.Y. Rangers. Hartford immediately traded Larmer, Nick Kypreos, Barry Richter and a 1994 conditional draft pick (sixth-round pick -- Yuri Litvinov) to N.Y. Rangers for Darren Turcotte and James Patrick on November 2, 1993.

Wasn't the deal that brought Adam Hall to Rangers and Dominic Moore to the Pens a 3 team trade with Minnesota getting a pick from the Pens?

yes and no

I remember the Oilers trading for Alex the Dog--knowing full well that he did not want to come to Edmonton and then flipping him at the same time for Espo's son-law Selivanov

two deals---but it was all three teams who agreed to the deal as each team wanted the player they ended up with.

Flyers wanted the Tank named Kovelenko
Oilers Wanted Selivanov puch up king
And the Bolts wanted the Dog

To Chicago: Christian Ruutu, 4th Rd Pick (Eric Daze)
To Winnipeg: Stephane Boreguard
To Buffalo: Dominick Hasek (the Hawks refused to move Jimmy Waite, what a mistake that was).
