Ola, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to sound so nasty. I just get irritated when players like Wheeler are evaluated based on their draft position and not their develoipment. He's just not developed like a number 5 pick would be expected to develop. He's not that smooth and his hockey sense doesn't seem to be NHL calibre (sound a little like a certain NYR prospect? Official hint -- Huge) If he was a bona fide 5th pick in the draft (like say Vanek was), there's no question Phoenix would have signed him by now and paid him top dollar.

this is RJ Umberger redux; only we don't own the rights to Wheeler.......yet. I don't know enough about him to comment, but I agree with posters that stated Phoenix will sign him; if they don't that speaks volumes regarding Wheelers ability to play NHL hockey.

I do think Wheeler got a much higher natrual skill level then a RJ Umberger and Hugh Jessiman.

It might defenitly be true that Wheeler isn't ready for the NHL at this point; but I still wouldn't argue his potential.

I'd take a swing at him. They can always pay him AHL money if he can't crack the team

Unless this is a bid by Phoenix to make a grab for the extra draft pick and then sign him as an UFA

thats probably it, why wouldn't he want to play in PHO, yea ok, hockey isn't #1 down there, who cares, that can't be why he didn't sign. Good move by PHO management if this is the case.

If not..................whats there to lose, I def. take a shot at him

I am confused. Phoenix offered him the max rookie contract allowed under the old CBA and he turned it down? Does that mean it is impossible for someone to now offer him more money then he could have made by signing with Phoenix?

Well...it's possible that he sees a chance to play for his childhood favorite NHL team, whoever that is, and would rather take that shot than stick with Phoenix. Who knows?

Wow.. Talk about an easy way to nab a Top 5 power-forward prospect for nothing...

I don't think Wheeler is really a power forward or a top 5 anything, except former draft pick.

I think he'd be worth taking a shot on, but he's really not some top, amazing prospect. He's got upside but, as mentioned, kind of reminds of Jessiman.

Look for the flyers to make a big pitch for him.

Well, the difference is that Wheeler was producing at a higher rate against much higher profile opponents...

I would sign him but I'd also caution everyone here not to get your hopes too high -- this is not the second coming of Cam Neely. He's got a lot of work to do (1-2 years in AHL) before he makes the show.

If I remember right, Pheonix took Wheeler a lot earlier than anyone expected in 2004. If so, as muc as I would like to see the kid here, as he is a tremendous prospect, I hate seeing this happen. Feel bad for Pheonix, and the fans there that were waiting on this kid to wear a Coyotes sweater. Waste of a 5th overall!

Tell me about it. No one really knows why he did it. Maloney said that Wheeler rejected the offer they put in (which was more than any team can give him right now) but Wheeler is saying that the team rejected him. Yotes fans trust Maloney alot more and we were all looking forward to having him on the team but I guess it isn't going to happen unless they do the loop hole of getting the 35th pick and then sign the kid but I don't think that will happen. And if it does, then the league will probably come down on PHX like a ton of bricks.

that would be nice, as we did get shafted on that deal.

Wheeler as a Ranger?

If it doesn't cost much, then why the hell not?

here I was hoping and praying the Blueshirts find another solid power forward....well at worst Wheeler is a faster bigger version of Jason Ward..

At best.......

Open the long term contracts purse strings Slats...this kid I've seen and although a project...Renney has been fairly good at developing guys the last few years.

Definitely go after him. Very low-risk gamble in my opinion.

but that can't be the only thing he wants. He could have gotten more money in PHX than with any other team in the league because he fell under the old CBA rules. $$$ isn't the only issue here.
