OT: Barry Melrose to Tampa Bay

Apparently its actually going to happen. I for one didn't foresee this coming to fruition. I figured it was just typical (near) off-season rumor.

This will either be very laughable and funny in a year or two or, strangely, it could work.

We'll see. I'm not betting on the later, though.

Oh this should be pretty ****ing epic. Sure why not. Tampa has Lecavalier, St Louis and Boyle signed and now a decent tender in Ellis + as Melroses first task he will eagerly go along with the drafting of Stamkos with the #1 pick. Plus he gets to coach an underperforming team in the weakest division in hockey. Yea the time is now Barry.

Lecavalier and Tortorella didnt get along. Guess Vinny won that battle.

So where does John Tortorella end up? Toronto?

Good for him, if true. I saw a report on ESPN earlier today denying it so I'm not convinced yet, but he's gotta be an upgrade from Tortorella. This could be another blow against an eventual NHL return to ESPN though, which would not be good, I can't take any more Versus or Emrick...

for that situation I mean. Tortorella lost the team, so anyone who could bring a fresh start would be an upgrade there, imo

Agree that Tortorella lost that team but he is a much better coach than Melrose IMO. I don't think John is going to be sitting on the sidelines too long.

Tortorella is a good coach and completely awesome in interviews, Wish him good luck in finding a new coaching job. I think Melrose is a joker but we'll see.

I'm a big Tortorella fan, love his fire and no BS attitude. Would certainly take him over Melrose any day. But Melrose did coach teams to a Memorial cup, and Calder cup championship, and a Stanley cup final (on the shoulders of Gretzky, but coaches generally need great players to win.) So it is not like he has not won, granted it has been 15-20 years. Sometimes being in the media gives you a new/different perspective. I for one am very interseted to see if Barry succeeds or if he falls on his face. He is certainly being placed in a good position, last place team, first overall pick, young goaltending with potential, and 2 great players, and Vinny who is top 5 in the league. I hope Barry does well, he is a goof ball and I can't help but root for him. Even though ESPN hockey blows!!

Nothing was funnier when Tortorella got kicked out of that game at the Garden.

Ridiculous. There's really no other decent coaches out there? All the NHL assistants, minor league head coaches, and formed coaches out of a job, and the best they could come up with is mullet man? Did you see the suit he was wearing on ESPN after game 3? They might as well have brought back Don Cherry.

I feel bad for Steve Stamkos to have Melrose as his first NHL coach.

Consider the development of Stamkos officially stunted.

yep, see no reason for this, ok, they had one bad season, Torts is a good coach, I'd love to have him (if we needed one). Stupid move.

this is a media savvy move and may get the nhl back on espn. that's why i support it. if i was a tampa fan, i'd be pissed, melrose is a circus act joke. torotorella will be behind someone's bench next season....coaches with cup rings don't grow on trees.

I'm hoping Tortorella ends up in San Jose because he'll turn Toronto into a playoff team and Ottawa into a contender. Bad news for us.

Barry actually did have an impressive resume but most of that was accomplish 14-18 years ago, hasn't coached in 13 years and the NHL is a far different place than it was back then. I think the talent on that team masks Melrose's inability for a few seasons and when it finally time for them to take the next step he fails.
