Winter Classic in Chicago next season

TSN is saying that the Hawks will face the Red Wings in next years outdoor classic.

Thoughts?

Original 6 match up. This is a good alternate choice to New York & it's tempting to visit the Windy City for this one. I hope they do it in Soldier Field, I hate to see hockey games played in Classic Ballparks.

I echo that last sentence 1000%. Soldier Field has to be the site IMO. More history and it's a classic stadium that looks great now after all the renovations were done to it several years ago. Wrigley Field is like a big backyard, seriously lol. Soldier Field would provide a much better atmosphere.

Good for them, expect a huge boom this year in the stands in Chicago.

I agree but The reason Soldier Field is probably not gonna host it is because in the past the Hawks have held discussions with the park district who control the stadium. They want to run the show and want majority of proceeds. If you owned a team would you acccept that. They also are worried about the condition the game would have on the Field. It is possible that the Bears could have to play a playoff game around same time.

I had hoped we'd get one for our centennial.

Thx for the info, I heard Pierre Mcguire talking about this & he had to mum up on it, probably because of the Soldier Field issues. Hopefully they can hammer it out. I just think that the sight lines will be terrible at Wrigley.

If Molson Stadium was much larger than 20 000 or what ever it is now, They probably could have got it. But, theres nothing to complain about with the All Star Game & Draft. Still, it would have been nice to go for the triple play.

Would have been nice if the Habs would have played in the winter classic for the 100th anniversary...

Anyway I think it will be a good game

Edit: Well Montreal has the All-Star game after all

I'd say a Winter Classic on December 4th, 2009.

That would be fitting.

Yannick Bouchard (RDS), during Sports 30, just said that Montreal Canadiens were trying to get an outdoor game for the 100th anniversary.

Happy for the Chicago people. They've had to deal with a lot of crap with their hockey team in the last years. Things are finally starting to turn around.

Some leaks seem to be pointing this out to becoming reality. Looks like Wrigley Field is in.

Construction could start as early as November 2008 after the Grey Cup, scheduled to be held in Montreal this year.

The Olympic Installations Board confirmed yesterday it has studied technical and architectural plans submitted by SNC-Lavalin for construction of a new fixed roof to be made of metal.

Economic Development Minister Raymond Bachand said yesterday the stadium is here to stay. The provincial government, which owns the structure, would pay for the renovations. The government is in favour of any changes that would make it more economically viable, Bachand said.
i wouldn't be surprised if something is in the works to hold an outdoor game in olympic stadium if they are indeed looking at replacing the current roof and will be removing the old one after november.

I agree, it would still make sense to have it in december 2009... to close off the celebration of the centennial as 09-10 would be the official 100th season for the Habs because of the lockout year.

Montreal will be hosting the Rangers on the Thursday before the All-Star Game weekend, which is Fri-Sat-Sun. The game will be played where the Als play, Molson Stadium.

the club was still in existence during the lockout year even if no hockey was played - the team did not play but the organization did not cease operations. the centennial doesn't necessarily have to mean 100th season in which games are played.
