Negotiations With A-KOS Have Started

http://www.rds.ca/canadien/chroniques/252937.html

I didn't see anything on this.

Bob Gainey saying that he has starting negociating with Andrei Kostitsyn.

Also in the article: Habs show interest toward Streit, but wonder about cap space. WILL offer something to Ryder ("1 million or walk, chubby") Ponder giving long term deals to Komisarek and Higgins.

GM meeting was only about regulations, no discussions on trades and such. Not that BG would tell us.

Contact UFA's in the next two weeks? Isn't that against the rules until July 1st?

You have the right to negociate contracts with upcoming UFA's until July 1st because you still own their rights until June 30th.

It is good that Gainey sees the important of getting Kostitsyn signed. He knows very well that a number of teams would be interested in sending an offer sheet to snatch him. Heads up play by Gainey to make Kostitsyn the number one priority. Komisarek has to be the number 2, considering he is a UFA after this season.

The sooner we sign Higgins and Komi to a long term the better I am.

I prefer Higgins and Komi over Hossa (Would exchange each for Hossa but not both). That is the priority.
Agree with you.

Komi and Higgins are two players we need to sign long term (7-8 years). They are the face of the franchise. Even if some don't like Higgins, he's a good warrior and his place is on a 2nd or 3rd line. On these line, he's pretty good!

As for Kosty, sign him for 5-6 years too. He's the next Kovy of this team.

He still has a year left at 1.8 andthen he is a RFA, I don't think he is much of a worry.

Not bad either. This would probably apply to 2009 draft...
There's no way Gainey wouldn't match at $3.5. None at all.

Just found it weird that Higgins was mentioned potentially getting a long-term deal but Plekanec wasn't as both are RFA's after next year.

Must be getting traded for Lecavalier

My sentiments exactly
The Habs board would end up with so many infractions if we lost Pleks to an offersheet

No mention of anyone by name in quotation marks, so those two names in the article could just as easily be from the writer as from Gainey.

Thanks ahead of time for any info on this.
It depends on how much he signs for per season.

Quote:
$660,000 or below None

Over $660,000 to $1 million Third round pick

Over $1.0 million to $2.0 million Second round pick

Over $2.0 million to $3.0 million 1st and 3rd round pick

Over $3.0 million to $4.0 million 1st, 2nd and 3rd

Over $4.0 million to $5.0 million (2)1st, 2nd, and 3rd

Over $5 million (4)1st round picks
However, this may be adjusted based on the salary cap. So add whatever percentage the cap has gone up since the first year to this to find the current ranges.

Is it just me, or is it funny that BG would have traded Higgins, but now he wants to lock him up?

Also, that only applies if an NHL team signs him. If he signs with a team in Russia for example, we get no compensation.

I would imagine Pleky is pretty high on Gainey's priority list as well. He was rumoured to be talking long term with Pleks' agent during the season, and based on performance and character, I'm sure if there are long-term deals being handed out, Pleky will be right in there with Higgins and Komo.

I'd be very surprised if AKost even reaches the point where other teams can offer him an offer sheet. I believe that date is July 1 (?) and if it is then Gainey has a full month to get something done, which should happen.

I'd love to see long term deals for Higgins and Komi because I think both are just getting better and are the future leadership core of this team (Komi is captain material IMO).

As for the UFAs...I really don't want to see any of them back. Maybe Streit but I don't see Gainey offering him as much money as he is going to want nor do I see Gainey giving him the guarantee of a top 6 spot on the blueline. Streit has said on numerous occasions that he would rather play defense but I just don't see it happening with us.

I think the habs will lose Streit. Some GM out there will only see his points and offer him 4 mil or maybe 4-3-3 for 3 years and I just can't blame Streit for asking for for this. He has never made big money and this is his one and only chance to cash in and secure his money future.
Streit has been the leagues best spare part for the Habs at 600k but Gainey can't pay him more then 1.5-2 mil as that great spare part.
