Rumor: Shanny back in Blue...as a coach?

In the same "In the Slot" segment that Squishy mentioned about Jagr's girlfriend, Sam also mentioned that Shanny wants to stay in NY, and may be willing to take a coaching role to stay with the organization. Do with this what you will. Apologies is posted elsewhere.

Might be cool, especially if one of the assistant coaches is leaving soon

That's what I was thinking. If Perry Pearn gets one of the open coaching slots (Ottawa, Florida?) Shanny could slot in there.

This would be nice. Don't want SHanny back as a player but definitely in some form of coaching.

Not unless the audio feed is available somewhere, and I don't think it is.

I wonder if Shanny thinks he can get one more payday in the NHL? He probably could somewhere else. But moving the family again for what? one year in LA, FLA?

It must be REALLY tough to retire from a storied HOF career. Especially when your God given elite skills always give you at least semi effective results.

He did score 23 goals last year. Third best on the team.

That's some food for thought. I think he is better suited on the bench either way.

id rather have the long time rangers like graves and messier be one of the coaches before shanny, nothing against shanny but graves and messier were rangers for a long time.

It was Sam Rosen, speaking live from Detroit on Phil Esposito's "In the Slot" show on XM 204. There's no replay or audio archive that I'm aware of so you'll have to trust Forechecker and I unless someone else was listening yesterday afternoon at about 5:45.

Phil asked Sam for his take on whether Jagr and Shanny would return. I posted his take on the Jagr situation in the Jagr thread (i.e. Ina likes NY and doesn't want to go to Russia). As far as Shanny he said he doesn't think Shanny will be back on-ice, but thinks the Rangers will offer him some sort of coaching position within the organization. However, he did say he wasn't sure Shanny would take it because he really wants to play another year. But Sam's opinion was that he's not sure anyone will be interested in him, because he was a step behind in the playoffs this season.

I think Graves likes his present gig, and Messier is the next GM. Bank on it.

The source is Sam Rosen, last night on "In the Slot" with Tatti & Esposito. They were discussing the Rangers off-season plans, and either Sam was asked about Shanny or he just brought it up. I don't know if they podcast those shows or not, so I can't provide the link.

Thanks Squishy!

I think Graves likes where he is right now. He loves working with kids and the community so i think hes very happy. As for Messier, i think he was more looking at the GM position more than coaching. Plus, Shanny is very well in tune with this team. He knows the guys and how they play better than the other 2. I think hes got a better position to be coach than Messier or Graves.

Well, shanny coaching is great, but running the powerplay will onlyy be effective if Jagr is NOT resigned.

What difference would it make? They PLAYEd together and it didnt work.

You know Shanahan knows how to run a powerplay with the right personnel - but Jagr does not fit in that style of PP.

I'm all for this if Jagr isnt resigned. If he is its going to be another tough going if Shanny is indeed an assistant and in charge of the PP. They'll be two totally different philosophies behind the setup/attack and the actual execution on the ice.

That depends on whether or not Graves or Messier really want the job.

It's also kind of like saying Graves or Messier should have been named coaches before Pern and Pelino
