I would NOT take him in the first round.

If Staal is on the board when we pick, i take him. Definitely. Simply because the potential is there.
But i think it is going to take longer for him to develop then it took Jordan and Eric (only mentioning the two brothers that are forwards, as forwards develop quicker then defenseman... Marc is just a freak of nature).
Stay away from guys with the family bloodlines.
The only reason i mention Staal is because he is VERY young and had a decently solid season based on his age. But he is still a project IMO.
EDIT: A project that we will probably not have to worry about by the time he is ready for the AHL. I should note.
but that fits toews completely. he was the leading scorer on his team as a junior and played with a broken wrist. he has tons of potential

Jared is the youngest, and its not too uncommon for the youngest to develop later than his brothers.
In Jared, I see a kid whos seen alot through his brothers. Looks like he's handled the high expectations well so far. He had a good, not great season but stood out on a mediocre team. He's 18 in late August, still plenty of time to assert himself and show what he's capable of.
Petrov is certainly someone to stop and think about. If you've got time to wait and see and are a winning team, four years seems like a blip on the radar.
If you're a so/so team and you're looking for results (good or bad) on a faster timetable, waiting for Petrov might seem like forever.
I agree. Petrov will be the better player in 6 years than many picked around him in the draft. He is my favorite forward "projected" to be still available at pick # 20.
I still believe there will be a player or two projected to go much higher that will be available when we pick. This draft is wide open and every team probably has drastically different draft boards after the top 5-6 picks.

28/32 - Livingston/O'Dell/Ness
47 - Any of the above/Fienhange/Comrie/Paquette/Lalonde/Goloubef
50 - Any of the above/Jokenin/Petrov/Staal/Hayes

Wouldn't any one of those guys potentially be better than Tyutin though? Not advocating trading Dubi -- though I have from time to time; but isn't Atlanta in need of a solid center for Kovalchuk? Or would they be more inclined to land another top-pairing d-man to play with Enstrom.

If we trade down, with LA, i would rather get their #28 and #32, rather then their #48.
So, how about...
#20 + Prucha + #75 for #28 + #32 + #48
That would give us 1 first round pick and 3 second round picks. We originally have 2 third round picks (one of which was acquired from Carolina).
And would give LA 2 first round picks and 4 third round picks and Prucha (who may not have much of a future with the Rangers).

rangers dont have 2 3rds....LA already has theirs, they have carolinas....i would like to get those two picks, but i wouldnt giv up another pick for it....although if a team would like prucha i would do that deal in a heartbeat....same with backman and hollweg
If we could get a 4th back for Backman and Hollweg I'd be a happy man. Who knows what that pick can turn into?
With Shanahan and Straka unlikely to be back next year, I'm very hesitant to move Prucha. Give him some minutes on Gomez's wing and see what happens. If he ***** the bed again, trade him at next year's deadline. Unless we are getting nothing short of a bonafide sniper for Gomez in return, trading Prucha would be a mistake at this point in time.
As for the draft picks, I would support trading down if it means the Rangers get another 2nd and a late 1st/early 2nd in return. However, if Carlson, Teubert, or Tedenby are on the board at 20, use the pick on one of them.

Maybe I'm missing something, but picks 75 and 81 are in the third round.
