Jay Bouwmeester!

OK, There are a few rumors starting to swirl around south Florida that Bouwmeester doesn't want to sign a long term deal with Florida which some are speculating could eventually lead to him being traded if the right deal came along. JM is a smart GM and would likely only trade Bouwmeester if it helps the Team so any deal would have to be very, very enticing. Remember, He led all NHLers(that aren't goalies) in ice time last season and is arguably one of the best young D-men in the league. He also has the skills to be a very good offensive defensman which he has shown some but really hasn't had a real chance at exploding offensively because of JM's defensive style and lack of quality D-men in Florida to help J-Bo with the load. Bouw could easily compete for top points for defensman if not on a defensive style team. Let the bidding begin on how much you think he is worth if he is on the trading block!

Trading Jaybo unless he completely forces the cats to would be retarded at best. In saying that though, I think Jaybo is the future of defense in the NHL.

I completely agree. He is the most important part of our team. I would only trade him if he doesn't want to be here and resign with us and like I said it would need to be worth while for us to even consider dealing him. I would think JM would trade him instead of risking losing him to UFA next year and get nothing in return.

While it would definately hurt to trade him you guys would get a huge return. He's the kind of guy you get proven youth for. Well at least as proven as youth can be. Like a couple of strong sophmores and picks or whatever. Trading him hurts but you can address the whole he creates leaving and another by trading him while still adding picks or blue chip prospects on top of it. Teams will likely line up and overpay for him.

Vermette, Meszaros, 1st 2008, 1st 2009???

That won't work, I know, we don't have the assets to aquire him (unless we moved Spezza, which isn't happening, regardless of what the HF community thinks).

I think the Pens could really use a d'man of his caliber, especially at his age.

To Pits:
J-bo

To Fla:
Jordan Staal
Letang

Agree that in most cases, there is NO way that J-Bo gets traded.

What people need to realize though is that J-Bo is going to be a UFA after the upcoming season, and there have been unconfirmed "rumblings" that J-Bo might not want to resign with the Panthers. If that's the case, he can file for arbitration, get a 1 year contract, and then become the most in-demand UFA that I can remember. If that's the case - there is nothing that FLA can do, except trade him, and the sooner the better.

Assuming that the above is true - I think that Martin needs to find out where JB would consider signing an extension, and try to get a deal done. Any deal would require a VERY good young d-man, + 1st , + good young player or NHL ready prospect.

If the "unhappy in FLA" is a bunch of crap, expect JB to sign a Phaneuf-lite contract here shortly.

His value is very high, and the Panthers would seek quality for quality (not quantity). If they were in a position where they had to consider dealing him, perhaps they would look for a straight-up exchange for a young 40 goal scorer. Someone in the class of a player like Thomas Vanek.

That said, dealing Bouwmeester would be nuts, in my opinion, unless he's forcing your hand. You can build a team around a player like that over a five-year period, if you sign him through his prime.

His looming contract status no doubt throws a wrench into the calculus, but they need to retain him or get a truckload of assets for him, and soon. This guy is worth offering serious money and term in contract talks this summer.

This is decent value wise but I do not think Pittsburgh can afford it. J-bo will ask for 6-7M a year.

As much as I like Sekera - FLA gets boned in this scenario. The difference between Vanek & Horton is minimal when you consider the difference in their contracts (Horton actually worth substantially more IMO), and Sekera obviously hasn't proven enough to get J-Bo.

With exception of Parise Devils have nothing to offer and Devils are not about to move Parise.

Yes some fans may think a deal around Gionta plus for J-Bo is fair but if I am Florida I would not touch this offer.

From Boston:
1 of these centers: David Krejci, Vladimir Sobotka, or Zach Hamill
1 of these defensemen: Matt Lashoff, Adam McQuaid, or Matt Hunwick
Andrew Alberts
1st in 2008

So Florida would get to pick one of Boston's top three forward prospects, one of Boston's top three defensive prospects. A young NHL defensemen and this year's 1st.

Fair? No, but IMO this is where Boston would start.

The only way Florida moves Bouwmeester is if he forces them to and if that is indeed the case the only sure outcome is that he won't fetch his full perceived value.

Bouwmeester's trade value is still very high - say Jeff Carter + 2nd/3rd even though I think he's overrated (good, but not elite and may never be).

From Columbus: Voracek + #19 + 2nd.
From San Jose: Marleau + Vlasic (+Florida throws some salary back)
From Los Angeles: Cammalleri + Tukonen + 2nd

TO FLO: Tomas Kaberle + Nikolai Antropov + Alex Steen + Matt Stajan + Ian White

TO TOR: Jay Bouwmeester + Nathan Horton + Brandislav Mezei

Florida gets three prime pieces up front, an elite offensive defender in Kaberle and a depth defender to replace Mezei.

Toronto starts building a team around Bouwmeester and Horton. Mezei still has upside despite the injury history.

If Bouwmeester doesn't like where the Panthers' future is, im guessing he won't like the Maple Leafs either.....just a guess
