I firmly believe that, if the players the Rangers like aren't on the board, they will seriously consider moving down. The LA opportunity just seems like a natural fit - Lombardi is someone Sather's comfortable making a trade with, LA's reportedly looking to move up from 28, since they have the #2 pick, plus additional 2nds and 3rd.
yea, that seems like the best move as of right now, i espect sather to wait to do it though just in case someone falls....heck, maybe LA sees someone high on their board drop to the rangers and they want to pay a lot to get him.....its possible
I don't care what the parameters of the question are because it is a flawed premise in my opinion.
A team should always take a forward or defenseman that they feel will have the biggest impact down the road. Never draft to fill perceived needs because 5 years later your appraisal of those needs could end up dead wrong.
I would never, ever take a goalie in the 1st round. Ever. Never. Ever. The exception might be if it were near the very end of the 1st round but I'd still probably pass on a goalie there.
If there is no impact player to be taken (in the GM's opinion) he should look to trade that pick.
I want a highly skilled prima-donna European styled offensive dynamo.
Unless you can get a real MONSTER crease clearing defenseman that can throw DEVASTATING HITS and play immediately. Which won't happen. So sign Orpik instead.
Dalpe is one of the few forwards I like in the 1st round.
Wouldnt be against taking him, depends who's on the board.
Different question - will Tyler Myers be the wildcard that could screw up the draft board and result in somebody unexpected be available at 20 for the Rangers?

Yeah, with that size he'll go before #20, just glad we're not taking him
Who will drop though? I'm almost certain Petrov will be at #20. Don't think so with Beach, I think he goes around 15 the latest.
Petrov should drop out of the first round, maybe even out of the second b/c of issues of him coming over.
Teams who already have plenty of youth in the system might not mind. They'll wait a few years when other contracts have expired, then make room for him.
I'd say he goes no later then first half of the 2nd round.

I wouldn't be surprised if he went in the third though. I wouldn't mind if we used our 2nd rounder on him, and if he still available in the third I would be pissed if we didn't take him then.
I voted for power forward but in hindsight I just want a forward with some size (meaning above 5'11") and skill. We don't have enough wingers in the organization that can score. Our defense needs an upgrade but we will do so through trades and free agency. The young defenseman that we have in the system (Staal, Sanguinetti, Sauer, Tyutin, Girardi) are sufficient enough to carry us through the next few years. But we don't have any potential 30-40 goal scorers in our system other than Cherepanov and I don't see him being a rugged winger for us anytime soon. He's slightly built and will easily be pushed off the puck early on in his NHL career.
Power Forward - why...well it's been often pointed out that the Rangers have a lot of young talent on the wings, but they're all small, they need some size there. 2nd, choice would have been a goalie but I don't see anything of great quality coming in that department this year.
If Filatov falls out of the top 5, I would really want to trade up to get him
If we have to give up our frist and 2nd this year, 2nd next year, prucha and dawes to get him, not only would it allow us to have the Russian GAG line, but also allow opening for FA Signings/Young players we already have to play
