/end thread. Outstanding post.

This is going to sound funny coming from a Flyers fan, but Ruutu isn't in the same class as Avery. Not even close. For anyone to suggest that Ruutu would be a 'replacement' for Avery is crazy. Avery brings so much more to a team than that worthless nothing Ruutu ever could. I don't get too fired up on a personal level about many players, but Jarkko Ruutu is one of them. He is a disgrace to the sport, and is a cheap shotting, talentless human being that's going to get his career ended in a pretty bad way some day.

Not to mention the bad blood between he and Jagr
Steve Downie is waaaaaay dirtier than ruutu, but yeah avery is 5 times the player that ruutu is, although ruutu isn't asked to score much, Carcillo would probably be a decent option (hes fairly talented for a pest), other than the fact that he takes way to many unneccessary penalties and will spend more time in the box over the course of the season than on the ice

Ruutu isn't as good as Avery, he is a dirty player, doesn't put up too many points, but he does add an edge to the game, will throw hits, trash talk, irritate other teams top players (you saw how he got to Jagr in the Playoffs, all history between them at the Olympics aside), and the Penguins used him in shootouts and from what I saw the guy has pretty good hands and scores a decent amount of shootout goals. If we can't sign Avery the the contract he demands, which I feel is a decent chance, I'd put Ruutu as option C, Matt Cooke being option B. Matt Cooke, as someone else said, I'd love to have on the team, but I can see him staying with the Capitals.

Ruutu is very good in the shootouts and on breakaways, he just barely ever has a chance for a breakaway in a real game situation

you shouldn't have to ask players to score, they should just do it

Comparing Ruutu and Avery in anything than agitation ability is stupid beause Avery is a 2nd liner and will get paid like it, and Ruutu is a 4th liner, 3rd liner at best, and will get paid like it. I don't think anyone is ever going to claim Ruutu's hockey playing, especially the offense, to be superior to Avery, but it's not like he's bad at his specific kind of game. Penguins certainly had some success with Ruutu playing his 10-12 minutes, throwing out hits and mouthing off.

Yeah, you don't have to tell Rangers fans about Ruutu on breakaways. We know.

Ruutu is a much better player than most people realize. I hope the Pens keep him instead of Laraque and sign a cheaper enforcer.

His reputation as a cheapshot artist is exaggerated, most of what he does is really obnoxious, but relatively harmless.

And unlike people like Matt Cooke, he can hold his own in a fight if he has to. Not just on for dear life while he gets ragdolled.

I'm not advocating getting him but a lot of the comments being made about Rutuu are the same things that were being said about Ulf Samuelsson before he donned a blueshirt.

I'd say it is. People talk like he's the dirtiest guy in the league, he's not even the dirtiest player on the Penguins. He throws less dangerous hits than guys like Hollweg and Schubert.

Ruutu AND Hollweg are two of the top dirtiest guys in the league.

I'd take Ruutu on this team instead of Sjostrom. A 4th line of Ruutu Betts Orr would be a very gritty and annoying line to play against.

If the Rangers signed Ruutu and lose Avery i wouldn't see Ruutu as Averys replacement. I'd actually like to see Ruutu signed along with Avery. Look at out division the Rangers with Ruutu and Avery every other shift in a 4 line rotation would be a very annoying team to play against.

I hate Ruutu as a player but i think if the Rangers signed him a lot of fans would quickly change there tune about him..

Like Avery (although Avery is twice the player Ruutu is) Ruutu brings his game every shift of every game...There is something to be said about that..

Yeah, what an a-hole. Nobody hits Jagr, he should know better

It was a perfectly legitimate, shoulder to shoulder hit. Ruutu can't help it if Jagr puts his head down at the last millisecond and then gets his forehead cut by his 1960's Jofa helmet that easily breaks to shards. (After the incident, he finally decided to enter the 21st century with his helmets.)

Note to Jagr:
When you have the puck, expect to get hit. Don't put your head down, especially if you have opted to use an antique helmet. If you were to, however, get cut because of such acts of your own stupidity, don't be a diva about it.

Yep. Agreed completely.

No idea how Pens fans can say otherwise with a straight face.
