RFA is spelled with "R" and UFA is spelled with "U".

RFA applies to a player that is a restricted free agent. If the player is a RFA, then in order for some team to sign him, they would have to give compensation to that players old team. The compensation is in draft picks up to a total of 5 first round picks. The old team also has a right to match any contract offered by another team.

UFA stands for unrestricted free agent. UFA players can sign with any team, and no compensation is given. Players become UFA's when they reach 31 years of age or if they play ten years in NHL and are making less than the league average salary or if their old team does not give them a qualifying offer.

RFA- restricted free agent...team has the right to match all offers tendered to the player. if they don't match an offer from an outside team, they are compensated by way of draft pick(s), or sometimes player(s) from the signing team. RFA's are players under the age of 31 years old before july 1st.

UFA- unrestricted free agent...compensation comes from the league, not from the team that signs the player. UFA's are generally 31 or older, although they can be any age really...10 year professionals making under the league average are UFA's. also, if a team doesn't qualify a player (giving them 10% raise if under the league average the year before...or matching their salary from prior year if over the league salary), he becomes a UFA. and there are loophole UFA's for minor leaguers- after playing a certain amount of games in the AHL, a guy becomes a UFA (not sure how many games). and there's also a UFA that has something to do with a defected player, but i can't explain that.
