Ridiculous, reading some post here one would think the posters are talking about a career AHLer...

sure he got lots of points during the PP, but hey! how many 4th liners (that's where he played most of the season) get 30+ pts on ES ? and how many of them can play Defense on the PP ? Forward on the PK ? replace anyone on the team but the goalie and manage to do well for a short period of time (at least)...

the guy got as many points as players like PM Bouchard, Brad Richards, Zherdev, Nathan Horton, Rolston, Drury, Tanguay, Whitney...

My issue has never been that he's a bad player. Far from it. My issue is that our defense corps is better without him, so if he wants to play defense on a full-time basis, I'm going to pass. He's a great passer, good skater, and can find a seam on offense, but he's just not good as a defenseman. That he played at least as many games at forward than defense this season should indicate as such.
I have little time for players that can't play in their own end.

Unbelievable offensive awareness. Great creativity and playmaking ability.

Not a great defenseman. Might be able to hold his own if he's paired with an absolute monster.

I would say he's worth $3M a year, nothing more and I love the guy.

Agree. I hope we give him a contract for the next 2 years.

We're talking NHL free agency, right? The guy scored 60 points, he plays defense and he's going to get paid by somebody. His agent probably laughs at 3 million a season, he'll get 4 million at least. Did you guys see how much players like Jay McKee and Rob Blake have received the last few off seasons? There isn't much to choose from defensively, teams are desperate to fill holes and teams have tons of money to spend=Streit payday. Would not surprise me at all to see Streit get 2 years 10 million especially if the Rangers want him.

Streit makes sense for the Rangers, who need someone to boost their powerplay. Going back to the Canadiens only makes sense if the Habs can't land a big free agent.

Natey is a riot. Gorges our 2nd best D-man? Really? Not Komi and Hammer?

Lol at hometown discount.

The guy hass one shot at free agency. One. Not two or three.

He's shaky in his zone, that's for sure, and he's not in the top 6 in Montréal defensively, which is sad really. On the PP, he's been nothing short of amazing with great vision. The guy would be perfect for a 4th line of "specialists" that don't play as often at ES, but he wants (and it's very legitimate) to play at D.

Someone will pay him 4 millions, and it ain't going to be Montréal. it's a shame really because he's great in his own right, but you have to see it from his viewpoint.

I believe he said towards the end of the season/playoffs, and he would be right.

Gorges was a beast at the end of the year.

As far as streit goes ya, he's pretty much already been summed up here. Great shot, very good vision/passing, but lacking the strength he needs to be good in his own end. I wouldn't want Gainey spending more than $3 million on him. Not as a powerplay specialist/ 3rd/4th liner. We have options in Hamilton that could take his spot, with S Kost taking his spot on the PP.

? One shot? What if he signs a 2 year deal? There's his second shot in 2 years.

I think he's saying that Streit probably had his career year and is now a UFA. This is the biggest money deal he will ever get in the NHL unless he keeps on putting up 60 points per a season. The reality is he was in the perfect situation to excel. How many other UFA dmen this offseason put up 60 points?

Anybody know who his agent is, btw? Like, does he have standard representation or maybe something a little different? I agree with those that say he might be able to pull off a crazy heist in the $4M range on the open market. But aside from that, I'm not convinced he has quite the standard North American perspective on his income and lifestyle, and maybe he's as good a candidate as anybody to take something under market value to stay where he's happy. Not _likely_ to, of course, this is after all the real world. But if there's a smidgin of a chance of it happening for any player, maybe he's the one where that smidgin applies.

well, I highly doubt that coming off a 60 point year, he'll sign for two years.

the guy has this one huge chance to go to the bank hard.

Either you're the most optimistic Hab fan ever or you haven't seen any of the contracts that have been signed in the past couple of off-seasons.

Seriously. How many other NHL dmen who scored 60 points last season made under 4 million dollars?
