Kevin Bieksa

Which teams would be in the market this season for a guy like this? Last season was a complete write-off because of his major injury. He's a physical defenseman (probably the toughest guy on the Canucks) and has puck-moving abilities to boot. I'm very sure he could better his 42 points he got in 06-07, especially in a division like the SE.

My first inclination is that Carolina would be a perfect trading partner. Bieksa and a 2nd rounder for Williams?

They'd probably counter with Cole. Williams is just to valuable for his salary.

I suspect one of these teams will be trading with the Canucks:

Columbus (lack of D-men)
Buffalo (could use the grit)
San Jose (open slots)
Los Angeles (zero experienced D-men)
Philadelphia (want upgrade)

Hows his rehab? Thats the only thing that would worry me because thats not just a common, i-can-recover-in-a-few-weeks kind of injury.

Yup, Williams is just too valuable and his contract is great. I can't see Rutherford moving him. Bieksa for Cole doesn't seem that far off too me. I could see Cole re-signing in Vancouver, he and Mitchell were good friends in their Clarkson days.

Yeah, I could see that as an excellent fit for both, and if I'm not mistaken, salary should be even - Cole would look decent with the Sedins, I think.

If the Canucks had Cole signed to an extension prior to the trade, I'd do it. But with Cole slated to be a UFA at season's end, I wouldn't deal Bieksa for him who's signed to a nice contract for three more seasons.

Brian Gionta, Devils get a top 4 d-man and Vancouver gets a guy who can play with the twins.

I'd rather have Erik Cole.

Why? I think Gionta will be great on the Canucks, Gionta scores a lot goals off of shot deflections. And Vancouver has guys who can shoot from the point. Plus, his speed and quickness will go great with the twins.

while I don't disagree with you about Gionta - fine player & all - but if I were vancouver, I'd rather have Cole (+ extention) than Gionta.

He's not tiny, more consistent, one of the most physical forwards in the NHL. Gionta's speed and quickness would not mesh with the Sedins at all, they lack speed and quickness. Besides, Cole is a great skater as well. The only thing Gionta has on Cole is that he's a RH'ed shot.

Exactly. Unless Gillis gets another dman through free agency (which would be stupid as he would be paying way more than 3.75/yr), you won't see Bieksa going anywhere. With the recent death of Bourdon our trade-able asset pool took a big hit. I don't think any Canuck Dman get moved this off-season.

Most probably, Gillis addresses our offense issues through free agency and an offersheet.

Jamie Langenbrunner.

50-60 point winger, good defensive play, intangibles, clutch playoff performances. Would mesh very well with the Sedin's and their cycling style. Signed at $2.8M per for next three seasons.

i know im a homer, but i think we can do better than bieksa, not to slight him. cole is a rare commodity as a power forward. if we HAVE to trade him because we cant afford to resign him we could do a lot worse than bieksa, but i would hold out for better. not bad value overall, but i think cole is the higher end player. i know there is a trade off because of past injuries and ufa status, but if the nucks resign cole they win this deal, imo by a fair margin. with bieksa hurt and bourdon coming on i get the feeling the guy was expendable, maybe not now of course. there is nothing expendable about cole, we just may not be able tp afford him.

I'd love to have Bieska in the Jackets top 4. I have no idea where to start with an offer though.

Bieksa is also a rare commodity as a defenseman. A middleweight who is a decent fighter, has a mean streak, has a decent shot from the point; and isn't a pylon (not to mention 3 years younger than Cole). Just look at what Orpik will get this off-season (in terms of a contract) and I think Bieksa has better upside.

As Buffalo, my first offer would be the 26th pick in the draft plus winger prospect Clarke MacArthur.

I would love to have him in Ottawa. I think Vermette is likely to get traded this off season.

Bieksa also brings substantial offense to the blueline, as well. He's a more valuable player than Orpik.

Cole's injury problem is overblown by most. He's missed the most time with two freak injuries, catching his blade in a huge rut and breaking his leg and then getting piled into the boards from behind and having his neck broken. You can expect him to miss a few games a year just because of the style he plays but he's not as ridiculously injury prone as people make him sound. His neck is now stronger than ever, his mobility of it has decreased a little bit but it doesn't affect him.

I would keep Bieksa unless Cole decides agrees to sign an extension with the Canucks. His injuries are over-blown. It's not like Forseberg where its chronic self-caused groin or ankle injuries, most of them are secondary caused accidents.

However I think the Canucks better hold on to him.

Ohlund Salo
Mitchell Bieksa
Edler Krajicek

You guys have four left side dmen and only two right side dmen. Let's say you do trade for Cole and get rid of Bieksa. Who would the Canucks sign to join the top six? Another year of Miller? Rather have Bieksa. For the Canucks system dmen are more important than forwards.
