So, Gretzky drafted a second rounder with the 5th overall pick and now he's unable to sign him after very average numbers.
Well done! Wayne = Isaiah
Since when do coaches draft players? Or is that something exclusive to the Coyotes' organization?
Good for the Bruins, any time you can get somebody like Wheeler without moving any assets, you jump at it (just as I'm sure many other teams in the league tried to do).
Who is Blake Wheeler and what has he done that's so special?
He's managed to show the missing attributes of Dorothy and her friends from the wizard of oz - no heart, no courage, and no brain. I even heard he has a bunch of flying monkeys.
Sad, but very true. See recent examples: Stoll, Gagne.
I'd say the Bruin forwards are better (on paper), but the Yotes have a better defensive crew. Wheeler signing with the Bruins doesn't make any sense to me, but best of luck kid!
My point isnt even that the Yotes are any better than the Bruins. Theyre not. My whole point was simply that the Bs dont have THAT much of an advantage over the Yotes in terms of offense that it would be a factor in his decision.
It seems pretty obvious to me that Wheeler chose the Bs because they made the playoffs and will continue to improve. I think the Yotes are only going to improve as well, but they didnt make the playoffs and havent in some time. Even though they likely will within this year or next (they likely wouldve made the playoffs had they started the season with Bryzgalov in net), that little hitch of not coming off a playoff season in combination with Kessel being a B is probably what gave the Bs the edge.

Wow. A lot of sour grapes on this board. Face it, it's a nice depth prospect signing for the B's. You'd be equally excited if your team picked him up for free.
I dont think its sour grapes just so much as it is people not understanding the hype and also not understanding his intentions of moving from a young talented team thats only going to improve to a..young..talented..team thats only going to improve.
great for the B's, they got a real nice young core going. THey're an up and coming team pretty much like PHO. Still don't know why he'd chose BOS over PHO thou, nothing against BOS. Maybe NO winter and tons of girls gone wild babes only appeals to me, idk.

Maybe Wheeler only wanted to be on the east coast? He was only talking with eastern conference teams so being on the east coast must have something to do with his decision.
And I'm sure Kessel being there was another factor as to why Wheeler chose Boston
But I hear ya I wouldn't mind to call Phoenix home
I second this as well...we are getting him for close to nothing, who cares if he plays in the AHL? He's coming out of college, and like most college players, it takes getting adjusted to the pro level and the whole new style of game it brings along.
My guess is that Wheeler will indeed make the team but I still don't think the AHL would be a bad idea.

I'm just confused to why this is so amusing.
No IM not saying its not a great pickup. Hell I wish the Canucks would of landed this guy. Its just you would think he would want to be in the NHL next year right? He could of went to any of the 30 teams he wanted to, he left College early must think he has a great chance of playing in the NHL next year. So for him to pick Boston then end up in the AHL I think it would be funny.

From his agent:
Quote:
"This is a great opportunity,’’ said Keator, adding that Wheeler won’t be available to comment until July 1. "But everyone, including Blake, has to keep in mind that this will take some time — he’ll have a lot of work to do to be able to play the man’s game. He’s going from originally playing center on an Olympic sized sheet in college to playing wing in the NHL. It will take time. This isn’t someone who is going to step in and play first line in the NHL. He may have to start in Providence (AHL). But he’s excited, not only to get the chance, but to get that chance with Boston.’’
