Nashville Goalie Situation?

I'm assuming Ellis is going to test free agency. If he were to depart elsewhere would the Predators go back to using Mason as their #1 or would they be looking for another guy? Atlanta needs D and you seem to have a surplus of quality defensemen which the Thrashers need badly.

Poile said today that he's not optimistic about signing Ellis, that he's probably going to go test the market. But unless we try to move Mason (and if someone agrees to take his salary) it will probably end up being Mason/Rinne battling for the #1 spot with the other the backup.

Curious to see what kind of money Ellis is asking for. Testing free agency could backfire on Ellis especially with only one year of NHL experience.

I would pay Ellis $2M or let him walk. That is a good salary for a starter and a goalie that hasn't played much yet

We would then, barring buying out Mason's contract, would have 5+ million dollars tied up in the goaltender again. Could/should have just kept Vokoun if this was the case, but alas Leipold was the guy who demanded the cut in the budget.

A buyout spreads the money out over twice the contract's terms. In other words, we would pay 1 million a year to Mason over a 4 year period.

Why would he do that, though? Supposedly, his fear here is that somehow Mason takes the reins back over...but what does he think will happen with Legace in STL?

Kariya re-signs in Nashville (e5)

Sorry, I have to bring that up for every Eklund rumor. Ellis going to the Blues doesn't make a lick of sense, especially for the Blues.

I agree.

Maybe its the summer heat but I also think there is a chance Mason can pull his head out of his *** and be solid splitting with Rinne. I'm convinced the Preds have decided that they would rather have Mason and his contract than move him and have Ellis with a new contract.

Ellis is still a risk and no one's going to take Mason's contract. I say stick with a duo of Mason/Rinne. Rinne's got nothing left to prove at the AHL level and is our future goaltender. If Mason still sucks the first of next season, then give Rinne #1 duties.

Now I know that everyone is worried that Ellis could be a one hit wonder and the ONLY reason for that is because of what happened to Mason.

But, what if Ellis turns out to be like Backstrom???

Backstrom split time with Fernandez in Minny. And then Backstrom due to inconsistency and injuries of Fernandez went on to be the guy down the stretch, all the while having Harding the heir apparent backing up. Fernandez was a league leader in GAA and SV% that year and they still let him go to bring along Backstrom and Harding. Harding is still not quite ready for full time duties. Backstrom was also 29 years old for his first season. This parallel is odd to think of.

What if Nashville keeps their Fernandez(Mason) who turned out to be a bust in Boston too, they try to push their Harding(Rinne) whom Harding was twice the goalie of Rinne in the AHL. And they lose their Backstrom (Ellis)?????????????

Backstrom rookie season

Fernandez is a solid goalie, he just can't stay healthy. With the emergence of Backstrom, they found a taker for Fernandez, then extended Backstrom and moved Manny on July 1. Backstrom also wanted to stay in Minnesota, I believe, whereas Ellis is likely to test the market.

Rinne played on some pretty crappy defensive teams, so you know his numbers are going to be a bit lower, but I think Rinne and Harding are about on the same level. Rinne gives Milwaukee a chance to win every night just by standing in the crease.

No joke--with Rinne there is no net!
