Hmm, very interesting. Always liked him, and he may be the best selection, but another ex Canuck / local guy? Perhaps cronyism isn't dead under the Gillis' era.

I'm alright with this move assuming that there will be another assistant hired with more of a hockey coaching background.

IIRC, Walter spent the past season with the Habs as a leadership coach, and look what they got out of Kovalev. Maybe he can do the same thing with Naslund.

I didn't see any topics earlier when I posted mine... I guess the boards are being wacky.

actually this wasn't the first one... I just noticed the other dozen that were also created as well!! Is Walter the next best thing to sliced bread? or is this fan base really that hungry for any canuck news to come??

hopefully we don't get a 100 threads about who we draft on Friday

edit: who we draft, not drafted....

1) Its the off season and nothing is happening.
2) I think most people know who Ryan Walter is.
3) Yes expect tons of threads about who we drafted Friday.

Yeah, I posted it, didn't see it on the boards, so I posted it again. No new threads were showing up for around an hour.

I think this is an excellent move for Vancouver. Seeing as Vigneault is not a player coach (in comparison to a guy like Pat Quinn), it would make sense to add an assistant who communicates well with the players and gives them someone they can confide with. His leadership qualities hopefully will make up for the a lack of experience behind the bench, but seeing as he's played over 1000 games in the NHL I can't see it being too much of an issue.

However, I still hope that they add at least one more assistant coach who specializes in coaching special teams in order to improve the mediocre powerplay and return the penalty kill back to the form it was two years ago.

We go from MG trying to get people like Deboers and Craig Hartsburg and end up with Ryan Walter. Somehow this saddens me.

This feels like a Brian Burke special "I could have had Nash or Kipprusoff for a 2nd rounder and a cup of coffee, but I wouldn't give up the cup of coffee, screw that."

Very meh about this hiring. I hope it improves our faceoffs, and Ryan does have a long line of hockey experience, I was just kind of hoping for some non ex-Canucks to be in the mix, someone with a bit of offensive flair.

Anyways, my initial reaction is blah, but who knows, I am far from saying this is horrible, it could turn out fine, I will just say for now I am pessimistic as always.

Same here but I doubt Mike Gillis is done. Could just be a piece of the puzzle.

Yep, I'm the same way too. If this is it for assistants, then I'm not a fan. But I'm pretty sure that we'll still see Gillis add one more hockey guy as an assistant. He's probably waiting to see how the Head Coaching positions that are still available fall out before making a decision, as his top candidates may be in the running for some of them.

That seems really plausible. So we have Bowness as the defensive coach and Walter as the leadership coach. Hopefully the next guy is someone who can orcastrate a good powerplay.

I still can't get over his grin everytime they had him on camera with Hughson during Sportsnet Canucks games.

I remember his keys to the game. Awful.

Anyway, I do think he could be a valuable assistant. I'm a little concerned about his lack of coaching experience, but I think he has some key abilities. He has experience from a lengthy career, he's still involved in the game, and he's been successful in business after the game. I think these are all traits that could be valuable to the coaching staff.

I think judging assistant coaches is rather difficult. I'm going to have a positive view on this Walter hiring.
