Maybe it's my naivete at gambling coming through here, but how do these odds work exactly? What does +800 mean and how does it translate into a 2:1 type of format?

It's way too early for me to even ponder who I would put money down.

Certainly wouldn't on Toronto or Detroit, though.

OK, so the Devils winning the Cup for a 4th time is 12-1 odds.

I like those odds.

If the lines given are money lines then the wagers are based on $100. So if a team is +800 that means for every $100 you wager, you'd win $800 (plus your original $100 bet is returned to you). A team like Carolina at +8000 means if you bet $100 and they win, you'd get $8000 back. My experience with casinos in Las Vegas though, the odds are far more conservative. I was there in October and the baseball lines were just being posted for 2004. The White Sox for instance were 12-1 which means a $100 bet gets you $1200 back or a $10 bet gets you $120 back (plus your original wagers).

If you see baseball lines, oftentimes when a team has a really strong pitcher starting, that team is (for example) -250 and their oppenent is +100. That means you'd have to wager $250 just to make a $100 profit (plus get your original bet of $250 back) if you like the favorite; if you bet the underdog at +100, you get $100 profit and your original $100 bet back. Many baseball games are -120/+100 which means one team is a slight favorite.

I'm going to bet $1 on every team.

Just kidding, I know $1 isn't enough.

I may be wrong, but I'm 90% sure you're gauranteed to lose money if you put the same amount down on all 30 teams.

In many Vegas sports rooms, there is a minimum bet -- usually $5 for such bets.

I did an AOL search for 2004-2005 Stanley Cup odds and the numbers are different on a site called World SportsBook. Detroit is favored at 7-1 (which would be equal to +700) followed by Ottawa, Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, New Jersey and Colorado at 8-1 (on the original thread the Flyers are 14-1 for instance). Longshots include:Carolina, Chicago, Washington and Phoenix at 100-1 followed by Pittsburgh at 300-1. Calgary is 40-1 equal to Minnesota, Montreal and Los Angeles
.

Looking at the board the Canadiens at 40/1 is a good bet. They have a good young team and a goalie that can get hot enough to contend for the cup.

I would take Pittsburgh at either 100 or 300 to 1 (as posted here) . . . if there is a salary cap the pens are set to add some quality players, not to mention the finish that they had the end of last season, MAF and Malkin, Mario perhaps returning, lots of ifs to choose from but if some of those come through, especially the boatloads of cap room to play with, those are good odds.

if you put one dollar on all teams, you would be almost guaranteed to lose money

think about it: $1 on all thirty teams is a risk of $30

thus a team with odds of 29-1 would make you break even

the only way you would make money would be if a team with better odds than that won
