We don't need a back-up goaltender. Ideally Price and Halak could replicate a Nabakov/Toskala type arrangement where both play well and we trade Halak when his value is highest.

Sundin IMO is the obvious candidate to pursue, if available, to add depth at center ice. If at half the price, Holik would also warrant a look as an alternative option. If we could lock-up Sundin I would try and add a veteran role d-man such as Teppo Numminen. A career consistent player he could lend a hand in the development of O'Byrne and Valentenko to become the same type of player. If we sign a less expensive forward, I'd go for a player like Foote to add to the d. Komisarek and Foote would be one devastating defensive pairing.

F: Sundin but will resign in Toronto.. so..
Rolston but will resign in Minnesota.. so..
Selanne

D: nobody

IMO, we don't need to add 2-3 players..we already have a good team. One elite player would make a big difference. A better 3rd line would help, but if we could get a first line player, the 3rd line would be better.

I'd want to see Jocelyn Thibault in goal.
I think he'd make a great backup to Price. I still think Price needs a vet to back him up. Plus he's french, so it's win win.

I'm also on the Sean Avery bandwaggon. Crappy player to play against, but this would be an amazing acquisition should Montreal pull it off.

At least if he were a Hab he wouldn't be able to get a shutout against us But his previous stint as a Hab was before my time, so I'll take your word on how bad it was.

UFA list Summer 08.... Who is coming? Who do you want Gainey to bring?

Choose the UFAs you would take in these... The green ones are those who stated they will test the UFA market publicly... the red ones are those who will likely not be on the open market...

Tier 1
Sundin
Hossa - Apparently about to sign with Pittsburgh
Campbell
Jagr
Rolston
Selanne

Tier 2
Malone
Langkow - Apparently signed with the Flames
Demitra
Huselius
Roszival
Prospal - Likely will sign with TB
Straka
Brunette
Vrbata
Liles
Huet
Naslund
Rob Blake
Morrison
Hainsey
Stillman
Redden
Streit
Shanahan
Foote

Tier 3
Holik
Nagy
Ryder
Smith
Ellis
Theodore
Fedorov
Peca
Stuart
Satan
Orpik
Recchi
Kozlig
Fedotenko
Vasicek
Conroy - Apparently going to resign with Calgary
Miettinen
Kelly
Mara
Pandolfo
Hagman
Hejda

Tier-4
Avery
Williams
Cooke
Brylin
Dupuis
Weight
Commodore
Modry
Nolan
Smolinski
Wheeler - Signed with Boston
Perreault
Lalime
Berard

A summer with Malone and Vasicek would make me happy... two big guys we are lacking to go further in the playoffs. I do not agree with thoswe who say that we should take Hossa, Sundin or nothing. We are not even remotely close to being that good. We need to prevent a harder season from Kovalev and a couple of injuries. And we need to address this lack of size. The sries against Boston tired our guys out and we need more players able to respond to physical play.

So I'd like Gainey to get both Malone and Vasicek.

I don't expect us to get any UFA's, but Hossa or Sudin sure would be nice imo.

The size thing is BS...did you not watch Pittsburgh vs Detroit? Pittsburgh was much bigger and had the refs on their side and Detroit was still clearly the better team. The Habs lost to Phillie in round 2 and the teams were identical in height and weight, we outplayed them but Biron badly outplayed Price.

I'll take a gritty 5.11" guy like Talbot 100 times over a big lazy guy like Vacicek...

I'd take Malone but I don't think he signs my 3 year 9 mil offer and somebody pays him over 20 mil for 5 years...no dice

I'm just curious... Do you think we could repeat last season's performance without making any changes? Or do you think we could go further in the playoffs without adding any player?

And the Rock says everybody!

We have to get bigger on our first two lines and we have to have that top center. So first it's Sundin.

Second we have to have that second talented skilled D to help Markov. Somebody that can replace Streit on the PP but also could play regularly and be great at 5-on-5. I raise you Brian Campbell.

We have to get toughter on our third and fourth lines. We have to get somebody intimidating that would play his regular shift and drop the gloves. And George Laraque would be perfect for this. It's a joke on how Therrien doesn't play this guy. If I were him I would be pretty mad. Especially if there is a good offer somewhere I would take it(second option, Andre Roy).

Finaly after seeing Price crumbling more than a few times in the playoffs I want a veteran goalie that's gonna support him. And Olav Kolzig(if he accept his role) would be perfect for it.

Maybe... but having big bodies like Franzen or Holmstrom to go in front of the net sure helps a lot in the playoffs... And from what I watched, netiher Higgins or Latendresse seemed to go in front of the net to screen the shots... And we just can't count on Kovalev, nor the Kostitsyns to do this, as they are much more useful on the wings... Koivu is too small to do this as well.

Watch what happened. Komisarek is the only big guy we have, and he was hurt badly and didn't play at 100% in the playoffs because the opponent knows he is the only one who is going to hurt you again and again. He needs help. Bégin doesn't make his job half of the time, Latendresse is scared to hit other players since the DiMaio incident, Lapierre is not big enough, and Hamrlik, while being good to hit, is not playing this type of game.

I like Campbell, but not at the $8 million his agent is supposedly looking for. He's young enough that he's gonna want a long-term deal, too.

Sundin for 1/2 years would be ideal. If that can't be done, I would also love to get Rolston... think he would fit great on a 2nd/3rd line, providing goalscoring and leadership.

I'd be super happy if we could get two solid free agent forwards, something like Brunette and Kelly, or Malone and Pandolfo. It seems like Malone is likely Columbus-bound though.

I don't think we need a D-Man that badly. But if we are to sign one, it'll be a #7 / pp specialist kind of guy to fill the void Streit leaves. A Steve McCarthy, for example. Or just re-signing Brisebois.

A. Kostitsyn - Plekanec - Kovalev
S. Kostitsyn - Koivu - Brunette
Higgins - Kelly - Latendresse
Kostopoulos - Chipchura - Lapierre

Markov - Komisarek
Hamrlik - O'Byrne
Bouillon - Gorges

Price
Halak

Hard to say this early, since we dont' know what changes will be made by Gainey and the rest of the east. That said to me the success starts and ends with Price, if we see the Price from the end of the season, for most of next season then we will likely be in very good shape but if we see the Price from the 2nd round or even from the first half of the season, then we could be in trouble. I personally think Price will be able to do a great job for us and I think Halak should be a solid backup.

I have been saying that the Habs turnaround will come from their prospects. Since Savard/Timmins, our farm system has really improved and while it takes years to bulid through the draft, we are just starting to see what good drafting can do. Hopefully we have a great one in Price, and it looks like we should have a very solid D core for a long time as we are loaded with D prospects. Can't wait for Pacioretty to join the team but after that we are thin on forward prospects but have a nice group of young forwards in Pleks/Kostitsyn x 2/Higgy/Lats.

Its great what Gainey has done, which is build our team through the draft. It is essential if you want to have a good team for years to come. But i always felt that in order to bring a team to the next level, you need to acquire a solid free agent. Right now we're a good team, to be even better we obviously need to go out and get that player we need (whatever that need is)

Aside from Hossa, i'm not really interested in any of the players listed.

Like last year, the biggest improvement the Habs are going to get are going to be from players like, Plekanec, Kostitsyn x2, Komisarek, Higgins, Price and to a lesser extent, O'Byrne, Latrendresse, Lapierre, Chipchura and Halak.

Every year we all go through the same thing when it comes to UFA's, however, it always proves that the best improvement a team can make is from within.

I'm one of the few who really isn't all that interested in going after Sundin...not at the price it's going to cost at least. Nothing against Mats who's a solid player, but throwing 6 or 7M at him considering his age/production, just doesn't entice me personally.

I'd rather the improvement comes from within and that Gainey can pull the trigger on some type of deal at the deadline
