Eklund does not say that, plus Gags is not getting traded from the Flyers

I have long been a proponent of trading Simon Gagne, provided it was a good deal, and they're sure as hell not trading him just to open up cap space. We would be devoid of scoring wingers.

This does make a little sense. With Giroux coming up this year and JVR probably the next, the Flyers have a gluttony of wings. Considering their history with mushheads and not so great cap situation (not cap TROUBLE but it's not favorable) this may be the ideal time to trade Gagne. 1 more concussion and he could be done. With that mentality, his price has lowered but with another concussion his price is next to nothing.

IF the Flyers trade Gagne for a top 15 pick, their lineup is still very strong and they gain enough capspace to sign a decent Dmen.

EDIT: This is Eklund we're talking about though, so take it with a grain of salt.

The riskiness of a draft pick is kind of equalled by the riskiness of his injuries. I'm not saying it makes sense, but it's not so crazy as some make it seem. He's easily a better player than you are likely to get in the 6-14 range, but head injuries are a scary thing and can end careers at any moment. Look at the likes of Deadmarsh and Lindros. Risky, risky stuff.

Right.

Every concussion you have makes you more susceptible to future concussions and brain damage from those concussions.

Gagne is potentially one hit away from a career ending injury that would leave any team with him in a $5.25m hole for the next three years. You can't buy out players with an injury, and you don't get the full benefit of the long-term injury exception unless your team is at cap max every year (which is almost never the case, since teams always leave cap room for the trade deadline).

This doesn't make any sense to me. How could the Flyers get decent value for Gagne right now? He's way more important here.

I would be pissed if he was traded unless it was for a top 5 pick, and that would be the only thing holmgren would take. A top 15 pick for one of the best two-way players and goal scorers in the league would be a joke. His salary is very reasonable over the next 3 seasons. Concussions or not last year he will be back to form this coming season. Just my two cents.

Doesn't make sense. They brought in Prospal to replace Gagne in the short-term. Gagne is getting healthy so they let Prospal go (prior to Gagne's clean bill of health they had expressed interest in re-signing Vinny).

Prospal had no interest in resigining with the Flyers and told Homer that during the playoffs.

Wouldn't trade for him

He's a terriffic player, but there are some things that worry me about him.

1) He's been treated by the Philly med. staff and they don't have the best track record regarding concussions. How many concussions has he had over his career? Can you really trust the Flyers doctors if they say it's 3 or 4. Could be actually 1 or 2 more than that.
2) He played only 25 games this year because of concussions. Missed 2 months from beginning Nov to beginning Jan. Shut it down for the year after Feb 10/08.
3) His salary of 5.5 or whatever is fine, but can you really risk that room against the cap on a player who could get hit and be out for 3 or 4 months? He'd be on LTI, but how many trades were made during the season this past year? If he goes down, you're going to only depend on call ups to replace him.

His health is far too risky to trade a top pick in this draft for him.

26th overall, 44th overall, and Ales Kotalik for Gagne if his health fully checks out and he shows he is fully ready to go. If he's not, he is worth far less than that.

I can see Vancouver doing this trade and running off madly into the night, celebrating their first pure goalscorer since Naslund went cowardly lion and lost his heart.
