Also mentions Pitkanen is NOT being shopped.

"It's sometimes helpful that the name is out there because you get calls on it, but we were happy with Joni and we're happy to have him back. If (a deal) is going to benefit our hockey club, I'm willing to listen, but if I was a betting man I'd say Joni is going to be back with us this year."

"We can get a couple of extra picks if we want them," he said. "We're sitting at five picks, we're probably going to get another one and have six, so we'll get some good players out of that."

This pretty much sounds like at least one guaranteed roster-player-for-pick trade - my guess is for a 2nd.

Which is pretty funny, 'cause in the Journal Lowe's singing out of a slightly different hymn book:

"We can get a couple of extra picks if we want them but there's not a big urgency. I don't see a void in our organization," Lowe continued. "We're not going to move players just to get picks."

Hmmm, that IS interesting. It starts off as the same quote, then takes quite a different turn. In this case I think the Sun quote is pieced together.

Doesn't really change much, he still said "We're probably going to get another one".

If Mayer got a 3rd, Raffi should get us either a late 1st or 2 2nds.... but I guess you can never count out the Leaf factor.... it's not even fun to hate them anymore.

I don't see that quote in the Journal article.

Anyway, if we really wanted to break this thing down to a cellular level , both articles could be correct.

For example, Stoll to Phoenix for a prospect + 2nd or 3rd round pick works.

You think that The Sun made it up?

Obviously not. Just noting the two different slants taken from the same press conference by the Journal and Sun.

Reading between the lines I don't think anyone of those 22 are blockbusters.

Thus the Journal's take.

He seems very confident he will add a pick (he will most likely take one of the 22), but it seems that any trade he makes today will most likely be minor.

If the Oilers could find a taker for Roloson they will do it. Clearing that off the cap would be a decent move if it is all Lowe can pull off.

I still think you could get a 3rd and prospect for DR. He was adequate and there are more than a couple of teams with unsettled goaltending situations. Roloson is an option for the Caps, Kings and Lighting at least. The Kings have a lot of picks.

This is the part that should be of interest to everyone that keeps coming up with trade proposals of 2 or 3 average players for Pitkanen. Lowe is in no hurry to trade him. The only way something happens is if he can get a better player in return, which would most likely mean adding more players on his part.

I hate hearing Kevin Lowe talk about how great of a position this team is in.

If he goes into 08-09 with this roster, the Oilers will miss the playoffs again and he might be out of a job.

Jamal Meyers is the Player that Raffi should be with more offense. I think Toronto stole him for a 3rd. He's a huge role player (think Mike Grier but tougher) but was burried on a terrible team.

I'd call it a good deal to unload Raffi for a third and a second would be all out win for us. Anyone making the straight across deal for a 1st, even a late first, owes Lowe a serious favour.

The same goes for people like you saying we are in bad shape.
Sure he has made blunders and crap, but he has fielded a pretty competitive team for the most part (save for the latter half of 06/07). To prematurely say we will miss the playoffs is a little overboard. To miss it last year by 4pts only, with the 'crap' we had, just shows how far we can go with a 'crap' team that Lowe compiled.

THAT, and we weren't playing with many key players.

You have to factor in the numbers game too though. Yes, Raffi is a bit overpaid and Mayers is a pretty good deal at 1.4M. However, one number should make Raffi more valuable than Mayers: Torres wil be 27 in October, Mayers will be 34!

I agree, the Oilers still don't have elite talent and they probably won't ever get far without it, which is why I’m hating this draft so far. They better move something or I'll be pissed. Please for the love of pete move something!!

I tend to agree. I keep hoping that maybe Lowe is just trying to BS everybody rather than show his hand, but then I remember how candid he was last summer with the media (waaay too candid IMO), about how badly things were going and I think that he's not a very good liar and is probably telling the truth.

Small steps please, no irrational moves ala JFJ.

I want to see progression next season - fewer GAs + SOs, better ES player, consistent PP, more wins, etc...

Dear Kevin,

Enjoyed reading your comments in the Sun and Journal.

I look forward to the quote in September that says "I looked around and said gee...we have a lot of forwards here."

Sincerely,

slats432

Yes I do, and Gagner is not exactly elite yet. Pitkanen is, well Pitkanen. Hemsky is very good but not really elite, IMO anyway.
