It's 1/3 and maybe more important than that the cap hit is spread over twice the length of the contract so it will be only a $527,833 cap hit for 4 years.

If the player is under 26 it is 1/3 for buyout, if they are 26 and over it is 2/3.

I dont think Cloutier will be able to get an NHL job this offseason. I bet he goes to Europe.

Why would you want a backup AHL goalie on the Flyers?

Cloutier's been on waivers before, and the worst thing you can have on a team is an unhappy backup goalie.

I think you also have to be waived before you're bought out, in which this is the initial process.

Players aged 25 or under count as 1/3 for a buyout.

Players aged 26 or over count as 2/3 for a buyout.

If the Senators buyout Ray Emery the teams cap hit will be:
2008-09: $497,167 cap hit
2009-10: $229,167 cap hit
2010-11: $562,500 cap hit
2011-12: $562,500 cap hit

If the Kings buyout Dan Cloutier the teams cap hit would be:
2008-09: $2,066,667 cap hit
2009-10: $1,033,333 cap hit

I'm pretty sure I did that right but I'm sure IB will correct me if I didn't.

Yes, that's correct on Emery. Cloutier will be $1,033,333 for both '08-09 and '09-10.

Wouldn't his 2008-09 be the $3,100,000 cap number minus the $1,033,333 buyout, so $2,066,667?

If you could sew them together, they'd make a fine backup.

Nope - IB is right (as usual):

1. Original SPC Amount - $3,100,000
2. Original Averaged Amt. - $3,100,000
3. Buyout Amount - $2,066,667
4. Buyout Amt. Over twice Length of original SPC - $1,033,333 $1,033,333
5. Buyout "Savings" (Line 1 minus Line 4) - $2,066,667
6. Amt. Included in Averaged Club Salary (Line 2 minus Line 5) - $1,033,333 $1,033,333

Yeah remember 15 months ago when he was 12-3 in the playoffs with a .926 save percentage and heading into the finals. Amazing how a guy can let his life fall apart so quickly due to immaturity and being money hungry.

Yeah sometimes a little dose of reality goes a long way with these professional athletes. We'll see what happens with Ray because he certainly has some ability. He's gotta work really hard to shake off the stigma of having a bad attitude and work ethic. It is usually a lot harder to get back than it is to piss away.

Barring a miracle, it will be Gerber and a UFA backup. Brian Elliott could surprise and step in, but Murray wants him in the AHL for the first half of the season.

Detroit has heavy hip-hop influence? Try Atlanta if anywhere, but they're solid between the pipes. Either way, thank GOD Emery's gone, I wouldn't be able to stand any more stories on TSN about the guy.
