Can anyone comment on his skating? Some reports say it's his only weakness and others say it's one of his strengths.

Frankly I'm glad we can avoid the controversy/uncertainty/headache of Beach. True he could become a dominant power forward, but I don't think we'll regret not taking him.

I think the idea is that he doesn't have great acceleration, but skates well once he gets going.

Let the comparisons begin. Of course, with the way things usually work out for the Canucks Beach will become an All-Star and Hodgson will be a 3rd line grinder.

Still very happy with our pick though.

Bob Mac said Hodgson is like Stamkos but without the explosive speed

Does that make him more like Tavares then?

At least we went with the consensus BPA according to most sources. People can't complain we even remotely went 'off the board'. I like Hodgson, but he doesn't particularly excite me.

I would've taken Beach.

It's an acceptable pick, I guess, but is he a future #1 center? I don't really know. To me, this is a player with Daymond Langkow upside who, conversely, might plateau as an average #2 center. Definitely the safe pick, and unlikely to be a 'bad' pick. We'll see.

If a BC product in Beach is piling up 40-goal, 200 PIM seasons in Chicago while Hodgson is a 50-60 point 'character' #2 center here, this will hurt.

This is ominous. Kopitar, then Perron...and now Beach?

2 years out down the Center

Sedin 1b
Hodgie 1b
Kesler 3A+
White 4A

Looking better down the pipe than it has in years

He said the only difference between Hodgson and Stamkos is skating

Thought he compared him to Stamkos, not Filatov.

I totally understand what you mean. I fell in love with the way Lucic play, I believe Beech is LUcic with more offence. HOwever, what if Beech ends up being a lindros liek Career and Hodgson becomes a MIke Richards?

I'd lurve to see what the Sedins could do with him as their RW. He complements them as he doesn't primarily score off the rush.

He makes short quick strides (seems to have short legs) and has fairly good agility but I don't think he has all that much speed. Have a look:

i was disappointed gillis didn't take Beach, he was the type of player that you could get excited over. From a purely offensive standpoint, Hodgson seems like the better choice but Beach brings character and that potential to be that big dominant centre that this organization has been looking for.

Still, the Hodgson isn't bad.

I am very pleased with the pick. Did a fist pump after the selection. Looking forward to seeing what he can turn into.

Even though he's listed as a center, Beach is a winger.

If he's putting up 200 PIM seasons in Chicago I won't be upset.

I'm very happy about this pick. In my view Beach is the one that we might have been banging our heads against the wall for picking. If Hodgson can improve his skating (not to hard with some proper training/ stride correction) he should be able to be a #2 within a few seasons and hopefully a future #1.

Go Gillis!

That's the flipside.

But I really am convinced Beach will be an impact player, and neither concussion was really that serious. And something about taking a 5'11 185 center who is an average skater frightens me a bit.
