I suspect that your focus on money is insightful. By my count, excluding J-Bo, there are now 8 other Panthers (5 offense, 3 Defense) with about $14mm in expiring contracts, who become UFAs next year (Stumpel,Zednick,Dvorak,Peltonen,Kilger,Boynton,Sk rastins,Murphy). Of that group, only the recently-acquired Boynton will presumably be resigned.

before I rate this trade I want to know a few things:
1) did the other GM's know that Olli wanted out or did Olli want out in the first place.
2) JM should publicly say all the offers that were given to him for Olli.

I can only rate this trade if these things are know because what if the next best trade was Ryder Halak and a 2nd and if Olli wanted out I can be at more ease about the trade.

Hyperbole seems to be the main dish being served here tonight.

Yes, this trade isn't what any of us (or even Pheonix fans) ever expected, but it's not as brutal as it appears on the surface. There are obviouly a lot of "ifs" to take into consideration here:

If Olli returns to form.

If Ballard fulfills his potential.

If Boynton returns to form (circa his Bruins stint).

If Martin has other deals in the works.

Like I said, I'm not thrilled, but it is nothing like the devastating return the Luongo trade brought us.

That will never happen. I would love to hear all the offers, but there is no way this was the best offer. No way.

At least we know he also has some leadership skills. What else can you tell us about Ballard and his play???

Hmmmm....did a quick check, and nope, Ballard hasn't scored 30+ goals a season for multiple seasons.

Who knows, maybe this will be Campbell's 'break out' season and we won't even miss those 30+ goals.

We better start praying now that no one on the Booth/Weiss/Horton line gets injured next season or we're really going to be the laughing stock of the NHL. Maybe we should start the season with the bags on our avatars...

I consider the Sunrise Express our first line. I can see Smurf sent packing and who knows what will happen with Ryno.

It was reported by Darren Dreger of TSN that olli asked for a trade on Tuesday. He's not one to make something like this up. It's since been affirmed by other news outlets. When asked, Olli directed all questions to his agent, and his agent danced around the subject. I beleive Olli did ask for a trade.

No, I didn't mean Smurf or Ryno would bring anything back. I just meant Smurf doesn't have a spot in the lineup. He could be waived/bought out for all I care. As far as Ryno goes, I don't know if he can even play still but I imagine we'd need to shed his contract to save some money.

What was the speculated trade for Tanguay? I would rather have a young d-man who from what the yotes fans say is really good, then tangauy whose on the decline. But if i was JM I would of not traded Jokinen.

Funny thing is that there are some Yotes fans who think they overpaid for Olli. While many are excited, a lot are not happy they lost Ballard.

On #2, that could technically be considered tampering if he did that - some GMs may not want the players they offered to know they were being shopped. They can come out and mention it, but JM can't.

It's rumored on the main trade page that Anaheim may be shopping Chris Pronger. I sure hope JM doesn't trade Horton for him.

Wasn't it Tanguay and Calgary's 17th pick overall? Our trade is way better than that.

Are you suggesting JM plans to skate 18 defensemen next season?

Hmm...on second thought...if anything could make the trap system work, it'd be that. 5 guys on the blueline, and only occasional pinching in.

The more I read about Ballard, the more I like this kid. I especially like that he was considered future captain material for the Yotes.

Again, the loss of Olli's offense with no immediate replacement troubles me. But, this could turn out to be one of those "addition by subtraction" moves if Horton wakes his ass up.

It's bad because on top of everything, the Panthers had to take a salary dump in the deal (ie., Boynton - he was put on waivers [maybe twice] - no takers).

Ballard will be a pretty good player though so this isn't Luongo V2.0.

I'm still struck by this trade right now, it will take a while to sink in.

Anyway the scouting reports from Sportsnet.ca:

Keith Ballard

Assets
Is very confident in his ability to lead the attack from the back end. Displays plenty of offensive potential.

Flaws
Must prove he can withstand the pounding of the pro game. Needs to continue to work on his defensive-zone coverage.

Career potential
Power play quarterback.

Birthdate: November 26, 1982
Age: 25
Birthplace: Baudette, Minnesota
Height: 5'11
Weight: 208 lbs.
Shoots: Left
Salary: $2,050,000
NHL Seasons: 2
Drafted by Buffalo in 2002 (1/11)

Nick Boynton

Assets
Plays a physical game and loves a heavy workload. Is extremely reliable in the defensive zone. Is a very smooth skater and excellent puck-handler. Possesses a hard, accurate shot from the point.

Flaws
May not put up the points expected of him at the NHL level, unless he starts hitting the net with his shots more frequently.

Career potential
No. 1 defenseman.

Birthdate: January 14, 1979
Age: 29
Birthplace: Nobleton, Ontario
Height: 6'2
Weight: 211 lbs.
Shoots: Right
Salary: $2,950,000
NHL Seasons: 7
Drafted by Boston in 1999 (1/21)

I'm not suggesting it JM is with all these defenseman. The way he is going, I think if he could find a defenceman that could also play goalie he would trade away Vokoun too.

I've been looking at the Group III FA crop and it's pretty slim pickings this year from a forward standpoint. Outside of a couple home runs (Hossa, Jagr) and maybe one or two middle grade (Huselius), there's not a lot ..

And with JMs history, I don't see him swinging for the offensive fences..

I'm trying to make sense of this deal as a whole, and I simply can't do it.
