From the THN draft preview: "More of a playmaker than a scorer, Hodgson has drawn comparisons to everyone from Adam Oates to Cory Stillman to Chris Drury."

If a BC product in Beach is piling up 40-goal, 200 PIM seasons in Chicago while Hodgson is a 50-60 point 'character' #2 center here, this will hurt.

Shift in draft philosophy. They're betting Beach won't reach his potential because of his character...can't say I disagree with that assessment at this point. That said, much the same was said about Perron...

Wow he does look a step slower than everybody else.

Canucks should start putting him in power skating lessons asap.

Praise Jebus!

Hodgson slipping to ten was a best case scenario IMO.

Meh.

Remember in 03 when everyone was talking about that huge, mean SOB Hugh Jessiman? Eh...

Very happy with this pick! Any outside chances of Hodgson making the roster next season? I'd say he'll make the roster sooner than White anyways.

A very astute pick by Mike Gillis
Quote:
From TSN: One scout dubs the Brampton Battalion forward as the sleeper of this year's draft, a complete package forward who maybe isn't as big or as fast or as purely skilled as some, but one who puts all elements of his game together as well as just about anybody in this draft class. "He's really not that far off Stamkos," the scout said. The folks at Hockey Canada would concur. Hodgson was the best Canadian at the recent Under-18 world tourney and displayed terrific leadership and character, plus an ability to score big goals and be the team's defensive conscience up front. He might be hurt by the tag of being an average skater and sub-six feet tall, but some scouts figure he has a lot of Chris Drury in him.

From NHL Central Scouting: He is a very skilled centerman who's hockey sense has him quarterbacking the power-play from down at the half boards. He knows when to shoot and when to pass – his point total reflects that. He's also a good face-off guy; he can take face-offs with the best of them and win them at the OHL level.

That fear is probably what had Vancouver shy away from Richards and take Kesler. Nobody knows how things will turn out, but I'm very excited by the draft philosophy the Canucks are now taking. I'd rather they develop the physical tools because Hodgeson's hockey sense is something that is rare indeed.

Pretty much the worst pick in the entire 2003 first-round. Seriously, how could any team **** up that pick? Such a deep first-round.

It's bad, but at least they didn't pick down and give the better player another team like the Oilers. They went from Zach Parise to MAP.

Hodgson was a great pickup for the Nucks and he will bring a great deal of leadership plus a great deal of both offensive and defensive skills to the Canucks. Im really glad he managed to fall to us because he is the exact player I expect Gillis was looking for at the 10th overall spot. Couldn't be more happy with this pick at the moment.

Wow - in reading the TSN tracker is there a pick Pierre doesn't gush about? Every pick's a great one ... lol.

McGuire: This is a gigantically positive move for Atlanta

McGuire: I love this selection for St. Louis

McGuire: Toronto wins huge here

McGuire: This is such a good pick

McGuire: Perfect! Tremendous move

BTW, haven't been following the draft much - what picks do we have?

You can never have enough centers. Sedin/Hodgson/Kesler/White are a pretty good group.

i think he might be converted to the wing. don't see him taking over a position from the other 3 centers, and he isn't the type to play 4th line. white might look good on the right side with the sedins though.

Same.

I think he is a safer pick, but the type of package Beach brings is so rare. I am not horribly disappointed but maybe a little.

White is likely several years away from even the AHL - who knows which players will be around then.

Perhaps. However, that 'being an average skater' statement is a huge red flag.
