Skating can be improved. see: Sedins. They aren't the best skaters now but they have improved by leaps and bounds over the years.

Every player still available had a red flag somewhere.

Boychuk? Size. Beach? Attitude and concussions. Myers? Man, I wouldn't even know where to begin with him...

True but wouldn't you expect players in the draft, being picked in the first round to have at least 'above-average' skating skills? Later rounds is another story.

Skating can be improved. Christ, wasn't it the biggest knock on Geoff Sanderson when he was drafted?

edit: guess I should have posted it when I wrote it, instead of going to get something to eat first.

Beach also has below-average skating, however, Hodgson has one skill that takes years to develop and thats hockey sense whereas skating can be improved in a couple of years.

I suppose it was a good pick, haven't followed things too closely, but it's difficult to get excited over.

Can't believe we couldn't get Jokinen, gah!

Hockey sense can make up for a lack of skating, just look at the Sedins. In any case, it will be interesting to gauge the development of Hodgson and Beach over the next few seasons.

How is "average skater" a huge red flag?

It doesn't say "terrible skater" or "worst skater I have ever seen." It says his skating is average. At tenth overall you can't get someone who is great at everything. If he had five-star skating he'd be competing with Stamkos instead of being available for us.

Edit: Just realized who posted that. Nevermind.

I like what I hear about our pick more than what I hear about guys selected in the other players taken 8-12 ball park, and Im not the rose coloured glasses type.

I value the leadership and hockey sense more than the other skills. If the only knock on this guy is that he isnt as fast as a really fast player IMO that is alright as skating speed can be worked out with technique.

No interested in guys with attitude problems that is for sure.

Guess who else is an average skater? Paul Stastny. It was the biggest reason he was drafted relatively low coming out of the lockout. Stastny has great hockey sense, and it's the primary reason that he has so much success. I would even say that Hodgson is a better goal scorer than Stastny. I think we've picked up a real gem.

Exactly. For the past few years physical skills were what was gone for, putting hockey sense on the back burner. So it's nice to see hockey sense at a premium.

Actually, it's a Gillis pick. Give your head a shake.

This was the exact type of player Mike Gillis talked about drafting.

I'm so happy with this choice.

yeah, i'm also surprise how much attention his "average skating" is getting. average means middle of the pack right? so he's not the fastest player, but with wingers such as raymond and grabner as hoghson's potential linemate, i don't think speed is a concern.

I guess then the question for the press to ask is why was he drafted and what is his role on the Canucks going to be?

Exactly.

When did "average" become bad? Average means he's Markus Naslund, not Eric Weinrich.

He was drafted because: he was the BPA

His role: score goals and set up goals, hes equally good at both.

I'm glad the Canucks didn't draft a head case like Kyle Beach

Yes this is awesome, I couldn't see Gillis letting Hodgson past him.
