The $725,000 signing bonus for JDD is the most ever paid by the Oilers to a second-round pick. The previous high was $600,000 for Doug Lynch. Deslauriers got a bump in the bonus because it'll be paid over the term of the contract (three years) instead of all up front.
If he wasn't the only solid goaltending prospect in the organization I would probably be a bit more cynical and critical of the contract terms. But IMO the Oilers had to face the music or face the prospect (no pun intended) of having to spend one of their first round picks in this year's draft just to get one goaltending prospect in their system.
I'm not upset. Delaurier, IMO, must be very highly regarded by the Oilers (perhaps as much if not more than Montoya and Schwartz). If he pans out it's worth it (as always). Goaltending was the weakest position on the team.
