All this talk of McDonagh, Pacioretty etc. for a guy we could sign for FREE on July 1st is making me nauseous.

Look, I know everyone is about Sundin, but even he doesn't know if he'll retire or not. This could drag out for weeks, or even a month.

PS: I've never seen a thread with 2,000 views and zero replies before.

Not really, as far as the Habs are concerned, either Sundin signs before July 1st or Gainey moves onto Hossa.

When was the last time a big name UFA limited his choices to Canadian teams in the East?

i'm thinking all three parties have agreed that if sundin signs with montreal the maple leafs will receive compensation of some form. bob gainey is too classy to try anything like that.

Some form of compensation does not automatically mean our best prospects, sorry.

Like Fletcher said last night, I think we will know the status from the Sundin camp Monday or Tuesday.

No, but it has to be a possibility, at any rate. The Leafs project to having some lineup openings, so a young player or prospect should appeal more than a draft pick, all else being equal. At the same time, I don't know that giving up our "best" prospects is going to fit with Gainey's MO. But somebody who might be getting a bit redundant like Grabovski or the question marks swirling around the likes of an Emelin might be pretty easy for him to slide into a deal.

Hossa may not be available, and with the addition of Tanguay this year Sundin is now a much, much better fit for our club in 08-09.

If he re-signs with Pitt, then we may be waiting on Sundin for a while.

Gainey said it too.
He will do what he has to do at the draft before moving on to Sundin

I voted for Grabs and rights to Elemin. But you never know they may have dealt a White or Maxwell

Montreal supposedly already offered him 7.3 and I don't expect him to sign for less money than that. Surely not for less than the 7 million the Leafs offered.

There is NO WAY Sundin retires. No Way. I wouldn't even be surprised to see Bob give him a 3-year deal for 20-mill. Just a hunch. I think he has a lot of good hockey left in him.

Supposedly he only wants Canadian teams and close to Toronto because of his business interests.

In fact, Howard Berger said on his blog, Sundin made it clear to Fletcher that it was either Montreal or retirement.

Give him a 2 year deal IMO, he is simply THAT good, even at 37.
