mats is only going to take a 1 year contract, 2 years max.

Plus he wants to avoid Western Conference travel. That's rather punishing, and he's not getting any younger.

Hey look, Montreal actually has one advantage over Detroit.

In fact, Howard Berger said on his blog, Sundin made it clear to Fletcher that it was either Montreal or retirement.
toronto has offered him 7M... so it's either montreal, toronto or retirement.

you're not getting him for less than 7M

But somebody who might be getting a bit redundant like Grabovski or the question marks swirling around the likes of an Emelin might be pretty easy for him to slide into a deal.
I don't see how it has to be a possibility. I don't see it at all.

Can you really picture Fletcher breaking Gainey's balls to the point where he refuses any one of Grabovski/Valentenko/D'Agostini/Maxwell/White in order to demand the guys we're most keen on?

All the aforementioned prospects are guys I'm really high on too, so it's not as if the Leafs are getting stiffed in any way, shape or form.

Everything I am hearing is that Toronto is out, that Fletcher believes that "the window of opportunity to re-sign Mats Sundin has closed"

Sundin hasn't decided if he wants to return to the NHL or play in Sweden or retire, but what I am reading this morning in the papers and blogs is that if its back to the NHL, its The Habs.

But you are right, also reading that he will not be taking any discounts

Well assuming that Gainey wasn't the only one jockeying for exclusive rights to talks, we could assume that the cost could be as high as a Grabovsky (whom Gainey could very well have dangled since a result of Sundin, Pleks, Koivu, and Chips would leave Grabs at either the wing, the AHL or a new home anyway). Hopefully not, as I don't think exclusive rights to negotiations is worth an NHL ready prospect. But I have been on record as saying the Grabs will be lucky to find a full time position on the Habs anytime in the future, so no great loss other than the sense of having overpaid a bit (IMO).

if he decides toaccept to play for the habs its not cause they offered him more money then leafs money isnt an issue really the issue is if he wants to continue play and if he does if he wants to stay with leafs or not

His agent flat out said he wants to stay in the Eastern Conf due to the easier travel and there's been talk he wants to remain in Canada for financial reasons, meaning he's got investments in Canadian funds.

Did you read any of the news last night. It's clear from all 3 camps that they will have an answer before july first and most likely in the next couple of days.

I think it's Grabo or a 3rd rd pick next year. They can't be asking much when sundin is a UFA in 10 days and they expect him to not play for them.

If we sign Sundin, how likely is it that we ask Koivu to move to LW ? I actually like the idea of a Koivu playing the LW better than having him as 3rd line center.

Still no news on what we would have to give to the Leafs if we sign him before July 1st?

IMO it's chipchura or our 1st in 09, that's if we sign Sudin to a 2 year contract less if it's a 1 year deal

Watch it be something like the rights to Ryder and Grabo - I'd be fine with that

Not sure if this was posted:

"Mats has always been interested in Montreal. Montreal is trying to see if they can sign him now — and then we'll go from there," said Fletcher, adding: "It would be better if you guys hadn't found out."

As I see it, there is very little that is clear regarding Sundin.

I believe Fletcher reiterated that he will have a better picture of what Sundin wants to do Monday or Tuesday. I've never heard anyone say "Sundin will give his answer soon."

How many players have taken weeks/months to decide on retirement after the season?

So if Fletcher is handcuffed by Sundin 's limited option I doubt Flethcer is in any position to ask for as much as some think.

Your offense line-up if we sign Sundin ?

Mine would be:

A.Kost - Sundin - Kovalev
Tanguay - Plekanec - Tender
Higgins - Koivu - S.Kost
Kosto - Bégin or Smokes - Lapierre

PP #1: Tanguay - Sundin - Kovalev (EEEEK!)
PP #2: A.Kost - Plekanec or Koivu - S.Kost

I don't know exactly why but I had a feeling Higgins will be the perfect winger for Sundin...

Tanguay - Sundin - Higgins
Andrei - Plekanec - Kovalev
Lantendresse - Koivu - Sergei
Bégin - Lapierre - Kostopoulos

I would try to keep Kovy with AK and Pleks. Think that line has great potential. Sundin, SK and Tanguay sounds good also

I came into this thread with full intentions of posting the exact same lineup.
