Reason for all the American picks?

Could it be that it's an advantage to have so many prospects in the US college system? They seem to be picking young guys who are 3-4 yrs away because we already have so many rookies on the team already. It allows them to time their entry in the NHL the right way, once our current rookies become too expensive to keep all at the same time. It also gives them more leeway in deciding when to bring them up, as opposed to a 18-19 yr old kid in the CHL who will want to play in the NHL in 1-2 yrs.

In the salary cap world I think it's a great way to go about drafting since we'll constantly need new fresh (and cheap) legs to fill in the spots.

I could be wrong, but i don't think it's a coincidence we have picked so many americans lately.

3-4-5 years to fully evaluate them before they sign them. Pretty good thing with the 50 contracts maximum.

Also less scout are looking at those leagues so more chance of seeing a guy he wants falling.

A bit the same Detroit did for so many years, taking guys where nobody was looking.

Also thanks for Sergei Kostitsyn, another guy nobody saw coming.

^ Good points, but at the same time:

BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE

Just because a player was born in a certain area doesn't mean anything, and people getting all upset about the recent flow of Americans are just blind idiots who still think it's funny to make fun of the country for no reason

Past US picks have worked out so Gainey may have more faith in whomever is scouting in the states. Kinda like Detroit with Swedes.

Gaston Therrien is such a moron

He just said that Montréal Canadians drafted americans because they are the only ones that understand the sentence "we are proud to select"...

For him only LHJMQ players are good but the other ones are bad because we don't see them play...

Seriously, he is ridicolous...

Timmins has stated in the past they like HS and College players because you keep their eligabilty longer and it allows them to develop longer, with CHL players and Euro's they go pro earlier because of the 20 year old cut off in the CHL and the various elite leagues in Europe.

Draft a HS or NCAA kid and they can come into your system at 22 instead of losing them at 20 because you haven't signed them yet.

Its a development strategy.

Is Gaston the same guy who said to change the team name to Montreal Americans because in the previous draft or the one before that; the head scout was grilled by RDS, for taking NCAA Americans.

Too lazy to find link, sorry...

The only thing they care about is quebec players. They are the only good players and everytime the habs pass on a quebecer theyre making a mistake. All players from other places should be ignored and aren't good at hockey at all.

anyone surprised? RDS is a joke of a network if not for them having the rights to the Habs games.

yup.. so I think while Timmins wants the BPA, he will pick an American over a comparable CHL player.

I always tought that. But i don't take it that hard their fixation on Q players, i mean most of those guys got links with the Q, got children playing there, have been working for the Q and know players playing in the NHL because of their relation with the Q. All that is understandable but not professionnal or interresting for viewers.

But i agree that Therrien is not very gifted as a human being,

I remember what he said last year after we picked Ryan Mcdonagh: "They say (they probably means Mckeen's draft guide) that he's an offensive defenceman. I don't understand why we drafted him when we already have Mathieu Carle in our system."

Lol ya Gaston needs to think before he opens his big mouth. I seriously thought with the signing of Tanguay they would shut up about the Quebec born players.

The reason is because American leagues are only recently starting to produce really good players and they are still relatively unscouted, compared to the CHL. And there are so many high school leagues that there's only so much you can cover...So there are alot of quality players that are unknown and available.

Don't waste your time.

When Ryan McDonagh makes it this year, he'll come on in saying how he always knew McDonagh will be a bluechipper.

Quite ironic when he thought "top 2 defenceman" meant" 2nd best defenceman in the NHL".

To rds' defence (somewhat.....they are bad Q homers), Luc Gelinas has been decent from the floor.

The rest is just horrible, unprofessional jiberish. It's hard to imagine another job where your connections can keep you there for so long inspite of the fact that you are a complete moron.
