Hossa Declines Pens Offer

Quote:
"I've talked to him and his agent (Ritch Winter) lots, and we look to be his first choice," Shero said. "But he's gonna go to July 1 just to make sure, and we'll see what that brings both of us. We've made a very fair contract offer. From Marian's standpoint, he wants to be sure. He knows the risks involved (in testing free agency), and so do we."

Ooooh......burnage

To the Pens fans: "Told you so" (i know I will get flamed for this, but so be it)

And everybody kept shooting us for saying Hossa was not genuine

Montreal signs Hossa to a one year, $1,000,000 contract. Tells him to have a "try out" with the Habs, kind of like what Selanne did in Anaheim

Ouch. Wonder if Shero tries to keep Malone now.

If we resign Malkin to a very reasonable contract I could care less.

If there is a better offer out there for Hossa I wish him all the best. Still does not mean we have seen the last of him in Pittsburgh. Glad Shero did not overpay, and I hope Hossa decides to stay.

I would personally rather not pay three forwards 24M+.....

But...but...he was going to be on Crosby's wing, and he wanted to be on a competitive team and blah blah blah

This is going to be a textbook reference for the future: it comes down to money. Who is going to pay the most? That's where the players are going to go. The city, fans, facilities, other players, coach, whatever don't matter as much as cash money.

If the Penguins pay the most, Hossa will be there. If not, he's going to whatever club makes the richest offer.

Good. The fewer stars in Pittsburgh, the better.

It's his right to see what's out there. I think he'll re-sign in Pittsburgh anyways.

Money money money.

No matter what any player says, it's always about the money.

If GOMEZ and DRURY could get $7 million last year, would not be suprised if Hossa gets something in the $9-10 million range.

Smart move on Hossa's part but he's most likely going to go back to a loser.

Whats the maximum a player could get?? I wonder if hed take a 10-11 million one year deal to sign with the Wings. Wishful thinking I know but...Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Hossa. That would have to be one of the best "defensive-forwards with 100 pt capability" lines ever assembled.

Exactly, especially when he is in his prime and will probably sign his second-last deal so might as well make the jackpot while you can.

Screw him. As long as the Penguins retain Malkin I don't see a problem with letting Hossa test the market. Hell, they could always just sign Naslund to a reasonable contract. Not that Naslund is on the same level as Hossa, but he could provide some offense if the price is right.

I believe the max contract would be 20 percent against the cap. So, for the sake of argument, let's say the cap is $55 million. The max in that situation would be $11 million per year. I think that's the gist of it.

This is no surprise. He said it before he would test FA. With Montreal grabbing Tanguay and possibly Sundin (they would have to ship a player and draft pick to Toronto) I doubt Hossa would sign there. I think it comes down to Boston (if Murray is bought out), Rangers and Columbus (long shot).

Its good to see Hossa wont be returning to Pittsburgh. Lemieux rolled the dice at the trade deadline and lost. As other posters have said, there are already too many stars on that team.

If I were a betting man (and I am) I would put him returning to the pens 2 to 1 still. I say he receives his offers just to make sure, and I still think there is a better than average chance he will return. But again if he doesn't no biggy.

I don't think he'll fetch 11 though, maybe 8-9, but not 11.

Hossa wants his last chance at his big pay day. Why not for him though, he's 29 and probably the last time he'll ever get a bigger deal from him.

I know it would never happen, but it is an interesting situation to think about. Detroit will have almost exactly the same lineup that had won them the cup, and Zetterberg and Franzens contracts dont kick in til next year. Not to mention, Hossa would likely put up phenomenal numbers on datsyuk or Zetterbergs wing AND have another great shot at the cup. He could win his cup and test free agency again where hed probably be able to boast impressive much better numbers than he did this year and land another incredible contract. Not to mention, Getting paid 10-11M for one year is about the equivalent of 1 1/2 years on another contract.

I know, I know. Pipe dream.
