Thats what happens when you peak too early. Russia were full value for the win. Thus far all the group winners have been eliminated and the strategy of 'resting' players has proven to be a dud. When you have the MO continue it by playing your A squad for every game of the tournament. Its very hard too bring yourself back to that same level in such a short competition.

They were impressive offensively vs. Spain even though they got killed on the counter-attacks... 2nd game could have been 3, 4, 5-0 for Russia... 3rd game, with their star player back, they went to the next level... and now they have beat one of the favorites ... So amazing!

the dutch ran out of gas in extra time and russia deserved that result. van basten's subs played horribly! van persie didn't create anything and afellay was nowhere to be found. he also used all three of his subs way too quickly. also, where was robben?

portugal, croatia, holland and spain rest their players in the final group matches, so does that mean spain is gone tomorrow? i sure hope not, because i won't hear the end of it.

I wouldn't mind if Moyes beat Arsene to Arshavin Everton have been loosely linked with him since they played Zenit in the UEFA Cup last year. If somehow we could grab hold of him and Engelaar I'd be stoked. Wouldn't put money on it though. I expect the stock of both guys has risen a fair bit based on this tourney.

That would be amazing for Everton! Seriously a star playmaker up front and a rock @ defensive midfielder.

Oh well, Iam not sure if the reason Portugal, Holland and Croatia went home just because they benched players. In a way its only normal....I mean, u are first of the group with one game left, why risk an injury of an important player??

These guys are all pros, I dont believe u can break the "rhytm" of the players only by benching them one game.

But thats only my opinion

Well, I really, really hope that "rule" doesnt get confirmed tomorrow!!!

Unfortunately for any potential buyers for Arshavin, his price tag just skyrocketed....

He'll probably go to Chelsky, end up in the bench and waste his career...

It would indeed be great but in recent years Everton have had similar fortune to the Habs in recent years when trying to sign big players - they end up elsewhere for the most part. Moyes has done well signing from the championship (Cahill, Lescott, Baines), getting good players who are less heralded (Pienaar, Howard) and throwing money at strikers with varying success (Yakubu very good, Johnson good, Beatie average). The next step forward is to sign some of these key guys before the richer teams get onto them and to keep what we have (Arteta) in place and build upwards. After the play by Arshavin and Engelaar in Euro 2008, I would consider us quite lucky to get one of them, even be in the final running for them. Hopefully the signings tide turns for us this year and we can get such players. Time will tell though, but whatever happens, In Moyes We Trust! The Habs have Gainey, Everton have Moyes
