OT - Gracious move by new TB Owners

http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app/?service=...ticleid=366681

David Carle learned during the Combine that he has to quit his career as an athlete due to a heart condition called "hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a thickening of the walls of the heart that has been cited in the sudden death of young athletes".

However, the new Tampa Bay owner decided that since the young man had worked all his life for this day, he was going to grant him his wish. TB used their last draft pick to select him. He may not play competitive hockey again, but no one will be able to take this away.

That's pretty awesome.

That is absolutely amazing.

I wish all the best for the Tampa Bay organization after this move.

The old ownership lost a lot of respect from me since the Anyderchuk ordeal. But this makes me actually not hate the team anymore.

Wow.. just wow. Awesome, awesome show of class.

great gesture... it's sad it had to be done by the lightning, who are short in prospects... the kings should have done it lol

but very nice gesture.

Agreed. I liked his answer to Duthie when he asked to compare Stemkos to Lecavalier and his answer was something like Stemkos will have the benefit of not having anyone make that comparison.

Apparently some people can't distinguish the difference between class and a calculated PR move...

I'd be a little worried if I was a lightning fan, if an owner is an egomaniac that needs to intervene in his team's draft to make himself look good, he's probably going to meddle in other internal affairs as well, which isn't all that good.

This isnt meddling...the Bolts had enough picks to solidfy their needs.

Its is more than likely a PR move, but still, to go through with it shows some level of class. And IIRC, the owner was drafted in the NHL at one point so he does have some hockey knowledge

Nice move. It might be a PR thing but who cares, no one else thought about doing it and in the end the kid must be really happy.

This is not a Manon Rheume move. And it's not like he referred to Stamkos as the next Michael Jordan. Time will tell if the owner is a hands-on meddler but I think it was a nice gesture with little external pr to be garnered other than from the Carle family.

From reading the title of the thread I'm like "ok whatever its all about showbiz whatever they might have done (I believe their owner is from Hollywood)"...

Then I read what they actually did and cudos to them....that is classy.
Let me rephrase that. This is one of the classiest things i've ever seen an organization do (sport or otherwise)

Neat story.
I bet there are teams that were going nuts when the drafted him asking who the hell is he?
Wondering if he was a sleeper.

This kid is extremely lucky, not just to be the beneficiary of such a nice gesture by the Lightning, but that his condition was detected. You know how, once or twice a year, you hear stories about an athlete in their teens or early twenties collapsing and dying during a game or practice? Well, this is what a lot of them die of. There was an article about it in either the Sporting News or Sports Illustrated within the last year or two. Apparently it's easy enough to detect with a fairly simple test, but it's not something done as part of a routine physical- meaning that, unless the athlete is participating in a league that requires they be examined for it before playing, most of them don't realize they have it.

Soeaking of classy gestures, someone on the main board said that the University of Denver is going to honor his scholarship even though he can't play for them.

you're absolutely right... Many people in this world do these kind of actions, yet some people think life is all about money and that everything we do or should do is for money.

Yeah, they are. He's going to have some kind of role with the hockey organization as well.

Aw c'mon man....you really think they need this as a pr stunt...??

On the other hand...to actually be drafted by an nhl club...that had to make the young man's day.

Who knows...maybe they'll find some work for him within the organization...

It was a classy gesture, no doubt about it.
