I thought I’d make a little run down on the new additions to the Hawk’s organization. Feel free to add to this, or flame.
Round Name Overall Pick Team Position Write-Up
1 Kyle Beach 11 Everett - WHL LW/C Good: has good size and will fill into his frame. He finishes every hit and plays a highly physical game. A big-time agitator in the mold of C. Lemieux. Has a heavy shot with a quick release.
Bad: he has concussion issues and had a sports hernia this season. Has the potential for being a bit of a hot-head with a ‘problem-child’ reputation. Didn’t finish strongly in the second half of the season. Has sub-par skating and average positional play. Sometimes it seems that he puts his own agenda ahead of his team’s.
3 Shawn Lalonde 68 Belleville - OHL D The Hawks traded up 4 spots and lost their 4th round this year to get Lalonde. That tells me they didn’t think there was a chance in hell that he’d still be there.
Good: Very mobile and strong skater. Is showing willingness to improve and play more physical going into the corners. Not very big now, but has the opportunity to ‘grow into his body.’ Didn’t get a lot of time on the PP this year, but that should improve. Good distributor of the puck to team-mates. Has a hard shot.
Bad: Average stick-handler. Sometimes makes bad decisions in both zones including taking himself out of the play to make a hit. Inconsistency issues. Needs to get stronger. Needs to improve his mental game.
5 Teigan Zahn 132 Saskatoon - WHL D Good: some leadership qualities. Fairly big, and will probably grow a bit more. Plays with a bit of an edge and doesn’t shy away from the physical stuff including fights.
Bad: Needs to improve skating.
6 Jonathan Carlsson 162 Brynas - Swe D Good: has good size. Mobile two way defenceman with good hockey sense and a fine wrist shot.
Bad: (I hope the Hawks didn’t get him mixed up with the other John Carlson). Doesn't play very physical.
6 Ben Smith 169 Boston Col - NCAA RW Good: has above average offensive prowess. Was rated by many to go way higher than he actually was. Very smart kid both on and off the ice. He could be a real steal!
Bad: Has some size issues, but has a bit of room to grow still.
6 Braden Birch 179 Oakville - OPJHL D Good: A very big D-man. May have been overlooked by other teams because of the league he played in.
Bad: Not the greatest skater.
7 Joe Gleason 192 Edina – Min HS D Good: small, mobile defenceman. Heading to the Golden Gophers next year where he should get some good guidance under a great coach.
Bad: Size is his major issue. The Hawks are hoping that he’ll grow a bit and increase his hockey sense, but he’s a long shot.
