1) Sign Redden - perfect partner for Staal, can play the point on the PP, and just needs to get out of the mess that is Ottawa. Gives the Rangers a legitimate top pairing on D.
2) Trade for a similar, but, shorter contract like Souray, McCabe or Jovanovski. The Rangers can send salary back the other way to minimize the cap hit, and you get a bridge until the likes of Sanguinetti and Del Zotto are ready.
3) Trade for Weber or Bouwmeester and you have a partner for Staal and the bedrock of you defense for the next five years.
I agree with #1 definately 100%....2 would not work out well esp. for souray or McCabe who are defensive liablities. and 3 is mildly outlandish because we would have to give waaaay too much for those players..

It's the cap era, so teams have to show some degree of creativity. You commitment is not as long term, and you lose salary in the process.

I agree, and McCabe might be available if he were to waive his NMC...but I just have this vision of him being terrible for us. He's struggled and I would definitely prefer someone who's slightly more solid on D.
@ 6.5m thats 2 firsts a 2nd and a 3rd, that would kill our farm...the 09 draft is supposed to be awesomely deep. Also why would you want a dman long-term? we have a bunch of great dmen coming up who will be getting paid @ entry level...no player who's name isnt Phanuef or Johnson is worth that sorry.
Also - you plan on landing a corry perry without throwing picks anahiems way? Thats just outlandish
I clearly said trading for them was an option as well. I also never said I wanted to offer sheet anyone at 6.5.
Everyone said this draft was incredibly deep and now people are complaining we didn't draft well enough. The 2003 draft was incredibly deep as well and look how that turned out. Just because there is a lot of skill available, doesn't mean you're going to get a chunk of it.
Why wouldn't you want a d-man like Weber or JBo locked up long term at 6 mil? I don't quite understand why people can't grasp this concept; An NHL proven d-man with an incredible skillset is far beyond a prospect that has potential but has proven nothing at the professional level.
I never made one comment about how I intended to get any of those players. Don't make assumptions.

I'm sorry, you're advocating signing Campbell, but McCabe is a no-go because he's a defensive liability?? What sense of reality are we in here?
If it came down to Campbell vs McCabe, I'd choose McCabe. Physical, HUGE shot (exactly what we need) and has a lower hit.

2 firsts a 2nd and a 3rd? Thats 4 players. Of course I would like a dman like Bouw or Weber...but I would not screw this teams future by giving up so many picks. Also to offersheet one of those players and have it not matched we would have to give atleast 7+ million. Thats 4 first rounders. That would be like us giving up Cherepanov, Staal, Sang and Montoya for one of these players. That is just insanity for a Bouw or Weber.

and at the rate of our team's off-season so far, it looks like we may be able to choose if we want Hedman or Tavares

I think McCabe would actually do good on our team if he's paired with Staal. I think he would put up at least 45-50 points and help our PowerPlay Giantly.

u guys are killing me........u talk about Streit, Hainsey and Liles.........well that is great they are solid but they ARE NOT #1 D men........Campbell is a PP QB..............u can't guarantee Sanguinetti will even develop into that.........if he does then great the PP is ridiculous for yrs to come
Campbell will hopefully take 6 to stay in the State he has played in his whole career and he gets to be re united with Drury
McCabe freaking stinks on D and is 5.7 million.......come on

Maybe its just because hes been on Toronto but hes looked pretty damn bad in his own end the past few seasons. Also Campbell has elite vision(better than McCabes IMO) for quarterbacking our PP. I agree about the cap hit and also less years makes more sense. Either way it's less realistic to land McCabe because of his NMC.
I certainly like the idea of McCabe better than Souray though...

you obviously dont know nothing. Campbell was offered 6 mil per from Buffalo and he declined it. why would he give us a discount he's not even from New York. And McCabe is alot better than Soupy on Defense, hate to break it to you. Look at McCabe's stats this year. on a crappy team he did pretty damn good.

So ur telling me you would want McCabe over Campbell if it cost just one million more to get Campbell?
No one in their right mind would do that......McCabe is'nt bad but that contract is terrible and the Leafs will give him away but he won't waive the no trade

Campbell will cost at least 2 million more, and I am glad you are not the Rangers GM

Ok seriously people
Sather is talking to Campbell..........meaning he wants him signed............he obviously knows how much he wants in general.........so he is going to atleast get 6 million...........he wont get freaking 8 or yea it is stupid
I am not the one negoitiating to sign him,,,,,,,,,the NYR GM is ........so go call him stupid but I agree with the move if it's for the right price
I mean seriously if Campbell was on this team last yr they could of beat Pittsburgh...........yes or no?...........the biggest downfall was the PP and this guy is a PP specialist whether u like the salary or not
Plus they are just going to dump Prucha and Backman which is 4 million right their and then go with Potter and Korpikoski to replace them which will cost a million or so............how does this not make sense?

Again, I never said I was advocating an offer-sheet to anyone. I'm not sure why you're still harping on that. If we could work out a trade for Weber or JBo, I think it's a fantastic play.
In three years our D could look like:
Staal - Sanguinetti
Weber/JBo - Del Zotto
Girardi - Tyutin
That is obscene depth and talent.

I think so as well. He's the type of PP acquisition we're looking for. He's a shooter, not a passer, which is exactly what our PP is lacking.

And Campbell stinks on D and will be 6+ million. Not to mention if we resign Jagr we'd have 3 PP QB's in Jagr, Gomez and Campbell with 2 more in Sanguinetti and Del Zotto waiting in the wings.
i just wonder why sather dont like physical tough dman anymore in edmonton he had those guys orpik and vandermeer is what id like, vandy to replace struds
Vandermer makes sense cause he would be cheap and the 6th Dman
I say do that and Sign Campbell for a discount...which still would be like 6-6.5
Campbell, Staal
Tyuyin, Girardi
Backman, Vandermeer, Potter

CAMPBELL WILL NOT TAKE LESS THAN 8!!!!!!!!!
this is his payday for his career, he was a late bloomer and is looking to cash in hence the reason he left buffalo.........HE IS NOT A #1 DMAN!!!!!
all forwards have to do is go to the outside and shield the puck and get the puck deep and he loses his guy ALL the time....honestly, how many of you people have seen him play for an extended amount of time?
also, dont you think its funny how two teams, buffalo and SJ who both have the cap room and have seen him for longer than any of you have dont want him on their team anymore for what he is going to ask for?.....
again, to reitorate, he will not be taking a paycut as he wouldnt take one to stay in buffalo and he will be lookig for 8 million a year as he is a 28 year old d-man who is overhyped because of his spin-o-ramas, but like someone else said, he is a winger in a defensemans body.....he is good offensively but bad defensively, something this team doesnt need.....whoever pays him is going to regret it

I don't like Souray either. However, with Gomez signed long term and Sanguinetti getting very close to the jump to the NHL, do we really need a 3rd PP QB? Campbell isn't a shooter. He's scored more than 10 goals only twice in his career since turning pro. We need a big shot from the back-end, not another assist machine.
McCabe was also the Leafs best d-man when he came back from injury.
4 yrs/6.8per
by then bsangs or zotto should be able to replace him, and campbell will be "leaving" his prime.
he wants 6-7 years....something more than the gomez and drury contracts....he saw what his teammates got and he wants the same thing briere and gomez got
You think Campbell will be overpaid.....everyone wants Orpik and he will get like 4 million...............i will take Campbell and never worry about the PP again thanks
