For cheap 2nd line options and his price tag, I'd take Wellwood in Calgary.

He has enough time to get back in shape. Everyone who has ever broken a leg gains weight.

Commence operation Tavares.

Yeah, because he's never been out of shape before the broken leg.

Wellwood probably ordered a large cheese stuffed crust pizza and 12 wings after hearing the news.

Dude has never been in shape or really worked out much. He'd rather curl up with a novel than curl a dumbbell.

I also think he could be a cheap option for the Ducks if no one claims him first and agree with their vets/coach if they can't beat his ass into shape no team can.

The facts are that the guy has zero work ethic. He skips all optional practices and even his own father (there's an article about it) has slammed him for an inability to get in shape and slammed his dedication to hockey. Not only this, but his hernia surgery didn't take, so he needed a second one, and even after the second one it was flaring up and causing him to miss a few games at a time.

And, to add to this, at the age of 24, he compared himself to Wayne Gretzky.

I posted this on the Flames board because it's obvious the only things people know about Wellwood is what they see on his TSN.ca profile. I also added a bit.

Quote:
You guys don't want him.

Pro:
- Creative with the puck
- Young

Con:
- Never has the puck because he's too weak to battle for it or keep it in his possession
- Small
- Terrible shot
- Not a very good skater
- No work ethic, at all
- Unconditioned (doesn't help he re-injured himself this offseason, won't be in shape for camp, it's like a cycle for this guy)
- Injury prone

It's the Leafs...don't ask.

I'm pretty sure we'll regret this in 3 years.

Wellwood will not be in the NHL in 3 years.

Someone will probably take a chance on him this year. I don't see him lasting the entire contract. No one will put up with him.

From the pic, Wellwood has about 20 pounds to lose, which can be done easily with a good training in about two months. I think a team will give him a chance.

Wellwood needs a big kick in the pants, several times over.

but someone will take him.

it wouldn't surprise me if they hang onto raycroft and just send him to the minors where none of his contract counts against the cap. is the 700 grand saving by buying him out really going to help the Leafs? they're going to have to pay that for a backup anyway..... at least here they got the insurance for pogge or toskala injuries and if they do call him up during the season and he gets claimed he's off the books at the end of the year instead of also eating space next year....

I just find it kinda funny how many people were adamante that Wellwood would net the Leafs a good player or good picks.

I remember several years ago when many Leafs fans argued with Flyers fans that Steen would be as good as Carter and Wellwood would be as good as Richards.

The Kings need a 2nd line center in the worst way, hopefully they avoid the Stay Puft Marshmellow man.

Couldn't you just put it into his contract that he has to work with a personal trainer in the offseason? I know they have a few contracts like that in the NFL...
