don't really want wellwood on the team. But I wouldn't mind sticking him on the third line on a 1 year deal

And then moving Kesler up?

The guy reminds me a lot of Marc Savard, he just needs someone to kick him in the ass (Ryan Walter? ). An absolute wizard with the puck.

On the other hand...

Yikes.

Still, I'd claim him, and then try and sign him to a one-year deal at below his qualifying offer.

Pencil him in as the 13th forward and make him work his way up the depth chart.

Ever seen Vigneault's training camps? The bag skates would get doughboy into shape in a hurry.

He shoots right, and the Sedins are speed demons.

no we would have three scoring lines and kesler would centre the fourth line. Mo would centre the third line. Sedins the second. and a big name RFA/UFA on the first.

Are we going to have a thread about every waived player?

LOL I love the attitude of some of the fans in Vancouver..."Well, he's lazy, out-of-shape and being waived by one of the worst teams in the league...but HEY! Let's give him a shot here!!"

That is a HORRIBLE idea and I may have to ignore you from now on.

Hehe, although the ignoring is a bit too much for me I agree with the rest of the sentiment.

Wellwood works better as a winger, anyways.

Atlanta-era Savard is actually a great comparison regarding the knocks on Wellwood. Doesn't have the same upside, but definitely has the potential to be a useful player.

I would say Calgary-era Savard is a better comparison.

i say just pick him up, qualify him at the lowest contract possible (if not let him be a UFA and don't worry about it, you lost nothing), give him a shot in training camp, and if he doesn't pan out or is a cancer or something just waive him again or trade him for a conditional pick or something, after all its not like he's completely useless and there surely will be a team or two with a hole in their lineup early in the year (due to injuries or whatever), it shouldn't be too difficult to get rid of him...

but in saying this, he likely won't be available when its our turn to claim him

You think adding him would be actually help? I don't see him being effective in Vancouver or any place that doesn't shirk defensive responsibilities. I usually all for rolling the dice on players but there is a limit. Wellwood has a broken foot, bad injury history, a poor attitude, and a refusal to train correctly. If he didn't come as damaged goods I'd be for giving him a shot but not the state he's currently in.

Dude. That spare tire he has in that picture above should be telling you volumes about how he values playing in the league and winning.

Exactly. Imagine the invisibility of naslund then magnify it by 1000

No, I'm just trying to explain to sticknrink and Judas why virtually every castoff from other teams gets a thread here. Our offense was just that putrid at times, that pretty much any player that put up decent numbers at one point has some attractiveness.

Of course we pick up Wellwood if given the chance. Last year as a 24 year old the guy was on pace for 70 points. The fact he's one of the better faceoff men in the league doesn't hurt either.

How many times do we have to pass on players put on waivers(Pominville, Briere, Sullivan)until we realize people can turn their careers around in their mid 20's? Virtually zero risk, big reward.

I mean the guy dished out 5 huge bodychecks last season. Well, 5 in total that is.

The timing is really bad.

If it was August and we had a pretty good idea what our roster was looking like heading into next season and we still had a hole that he could fit into, sure I'd take a look. Or mid-season if we were having trouble scoring.

But just in front of the UFA period to commit $1 million for next season to a player we might have no use for whatsoever (and might need the cash to spend on a Hossa or Demitra or whoever), I have a hard time with.

We'd have to QO him.

But we could always waive him if he doesn't get his act together (Put him in a room with Ryan Walter, a doughnut and an Apple, if he touches the doughnut he goes back on waivers.)

Assuming he's not claimed (I think the chances of that are pretty good for the reasons you mention), it doesn't look as though Toronto will be qualifying him and he'll be a UFA anyway. He may take a two-way deal with some team to get a shot to stay in the NHL.
