OT:Wellwood a Canuck-Canucks claimed him off waivers

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey//2008...nucks_wellwood

Discuss.

The Canucks are reminding me of the Habs circa 1999-2001 when it comes to attract players.

The only players they can obtain are essentially scraps discarded/dumped by other teams.

I don't see what this goes on. Stats indicate his point totals seem to be on the decline, he's not even close to being a playoff performer. While good on the PP, we don't need some guy 5'10 to stand in front of the crease. Tucker was the go to guy after Sundin for their PP, that's why he has that many points. Even then, if we'd make him a go to guy, our pp would be based on what, crashing the net as opposed to using our skill? What's the point of getting superstars to add skill if you'll change the team PP philosophy(which has worked for who knows how long now) into adding a guy who the only thing he can do is pick up rebounds. Can he set up a play on the PP or make a nice pass? It seems like no by his PP assist totals.

Besides, the guy looks more out of shape to me than anything. I've had a few injuries where I had limited mobility and no matter how in shape I was before, I always put on several pounds afterwards. This guy can easilly get back to game-ready shape in 6-8 weeks with the right training regiment.
She wears the shorts to indicate that she's trained in giving mouth-to-mouth resucitation.

Good move for a team that needs offensive skill. Wellwood is better *right now* than Rypien, Shannon, Isbister, Raymond etc., and though it won't be the big answer for them it's a big step up from Byron Ritchie. I think Mason Raymond will likely be the best of that group given time but we'll see.

IMO Wellwood > Pyatt too. After watching 30-odd 'Nucks games this year I'm sure this is an improvement. Also, Wellwood seemed to have good games vs. the Habs, so.... very good to see him play out West.

Getting rid of Tucker --- good move he's old
Getting rid of Raycroft --- good move he's ****
getting rid of Wellwood -- he's young... its
Trading draft picks for an older vet like Jamal Mayers ---
Talking about spending at or near the cap again....

Does this organization have a plan.... the moves seem very random and weird to me...

Yet, their GM mentioned that they will be spending close to the cap.

lol, trading in those draft picks for non-impact players like Mayers (who I don't mind) is like a sneaky way of legally going for the number 1 pick. If getting the lottery pick means using up some draft picks to do so? Hell you know I would be on that boat.
And you know they have to spend near the cap or else everyone and their pet dogs will know that they are blowing up the team JUST to get the lottery pick. Wouldn't surprise me in the least if they use up to the cap and get a whole team of nobodies that just plan sucks a huge one.

If they use that cap space to get the likes of Hossa or other impact players...then I would concede that I'm wrong but until they do, I believe their plan A is the lottery ticket...even if they hide it with superfluous spending of the cap. Heck, maybe that ridiculous contract to mccabe or kubina wasn't such a bad idea after all...course they did get a home town discount for kaberle...

Without Wellwood, Sundin and Tucker they should be 6 easy wins next year. I doubt we go 6-0 against the Bruins again so it kind of evens out on our end.

Didn't Wellwood have a hat trick against us last year? Or was that the year before?

Some people here are a bit retarded -- everybody in the NHL is there because they want to win, if you don't win, you lose your job. Do you honestly think one team's "Plan A" (excuse my laughter) IS TO LOSE EVERY GAME?

Either you are like 14 or you've accepted the 1984 Pittsburgh Lemieux myth (yes myth, because it's not a proven fact) as a common practice among competitive leagues

"They waived Wellwood and traded a 3rd rounder for a good character player --- CAN'T YOU SEE THEY ARE TRYING TO LOSE 82 GAMES NEXT YEAR?" seriously... and you'll only believe they aren't trying to tank if a superstar decides HE wants to go there...hahaha...okay I'm sorry for making fun of you but come on

Heum, tell me, even if the guy is Guillaume Fatendresse ? I seen him practice with 15 year old boys at College Charles-Lemoyne, some of them were skating circles around him. Bah, no, the media will probably try to persuade us all that weight is muscle.

Some of their moves show thoughts of rebuilding with youth... ie trade up and get a blue chipper in Schenn.... get rid of tucker... etc...

Then some of them scream win now.... draft picks for Mayers; spending to the cap; etc...

And some make no sense at all.... letting wellwood go for nothing....

Its a puzzling way of trying to run a franchise... no idea if they are coming or going in that city.

What I'm trying to say is that I think they are trying to maximize their chances of hitting the lottery, while developing their young prospects while doing just enough to give hope to their fans that they aren't that bad and that their future is much brighter. That is totally a different strategy then to lose every single bloody game. If that was the case, Kaberle wouldn't be on the team, neither would pogge (well, in the minors), Steen, Tlusty etc etc.

Probably not a problem, what with their tendencies of over paying everyone not named Kaberle or Sundin....

Ahhhhhhh such cunning wit. I actually don't own one of those shirts, it was an example. But I've known quite a few guys who wear shirts like that get more "ladies" in a month than I have in my whole life. Its not about the shirt you wear, but whats inside the shirt that counts. You take a charming, good-natured & confident guy and put him into any shirt and women will react to him. Put an overbearing, guy who lacks confidence that has no social graces into the best clothes money can buy and all he will attract are the type of women who would sleep with a pile of crap if it was rich. I guess its all a matter of perspective.
