I am a little bit surprised that Fernholm, Ehelechner and Filewich received qualifying offers. At age 24, Fernholm really needs to make the move over to the NHL. Who knows, maybe he's a sleeper candidate on our blueline.
A note re: Mark Ardelan, according to the uber-reliable eurohockey.net site, he signed to play in Finland next season...
It's just smart business to retain a player's rights even if they never set foot in NA. Especially when those rights cost nothing.
I understand that, but I guess I'm always wondering about the team's reserve-list limit, or the limit of players under contract (50?). Whatever it is under the new CBA. I suppose having only four more draft picks in the fold is a factor. If we had 15 picks like the Kings, I doubt we would have qualified everybody.
I'm all for using a up and down rotation of Connor James, Chris Minard, Jeff Taffe, Ryan Stone, Jonathan Filewich, etc. to play 4th line minutes alongside Adam Hall and Jarkko Ruutu (matchup and linemate pairings could have some playing the 3rd line).
If we can get:
Naslund at $3 million.
Hossa at $8.5 million.
Orpik at $3.5 million.
Ruutu at $1.25 million.
Fleury at $4.5 million.
Adam Hall at $950,000.
And rotate those guys above on two-way contracts.

I just do not see Shero overpaying for Hossa. I think he offered him what he sees his value at and thats it. I am sort of resigned to the fact that Hossa will be gone. We will have a ton of room to improve our club in the coming years though.

$8.5 million is to much. The way the cap is going up we could maybe still do it but that would be a big risk. The max. I would go is $8 million and that is more than I would want to go. If we were talking 5 year's it is not bad but 7 years at $8 million is pretty high for a guy that will be 35 and 36 years old during those last two years.
Why cannot Hossa sign for $52.5 M/7 years? It sounds perfect to me, so Hossa, SIGN FOR US!! And if 7 years is too much, then take less years but still take the $7.5 M cap number!

If possible, I think that I'd be happy with the following lineup. Total Cap hit for 08-09 is $51.462mm, which gives plenty of room to add players at the deadline (and to absorb Staal and Malkin in 09-10). What is incredible is that the average age of that lineup is 26 years old.
fixed eaton's numbers and added in godard... starting to get a better idea of what we're looking at now with 16 guys likely locked in there. those guys will probably only change if they keep orpik -- then you're probably looking at one of those d-men getting jettisoned.
so of the remaining seven roster spots, you've got fleury, maybe hossa and ruutu and a UFA signing at the top of the list. then you're pretty much down to your taffes and tim brents of the world. still a good deal of flexibility there.
so... eight NHL d-men on the roster? who will give shero a sixth-round pick to take sydor's contract? my guess is they'll make it pretty clear to him that he's not in their plans this year and that it's in his best interest to waive that NTC.

it should also be noted that the numbers i have are geared toward the opening-night roster of 23 guys. if you're checking out the cap space feature irish blues (chip m.) has set up on eklund's site, the numbers are a little different because they're calculated using the summer overage allowance -- which is a little over $60mi. as such, he has goligoski's 900k figured in with the pens' current cap hit.
if we start getting close to the ceiling for the actual season, i'll probably throw in the summer cap number too.
I'd guess we have about 10 more to play with this year since Shero will probably want to keep like 5ish free for Malkin's deal kicking in, Staal's new deal, and possible deadline deals.

Still early in the FA season, but a LOT of teams are well below the floor. Sydor might be a good fit for a rebuilding team that has to spend some money now such as Atlanta or (especially) LA.
Bet it will be one of those deals like Sydor and a 6th for another teams 4th or 5th.
At least this cap isn't the NBA cap...you can dump cap space!
