Didn't see this posted...wow, that's pretty harsh. I don't agree with it at all. The NTC/NMC was given to the player to be used at their discretion. Now the Leafs are just going to bully McCabe into not playing because he's exercising his right to use something that was given to him by them? Sounds cheap to me.
To anyone who might know, what would be the course of events if they did make him stay home? The link says McCabe would file a grievance with the NHLPA, but then what?
What a mess the leafs are in. This is not going to be a fun season to be a leaf fan. Buying him out makes zero sense. McCabe has his faults and but who is going to replace him. From within there isn't anyone and any UFA or RFA's are going to cost you just as much.
It won't be a fun year for McCabe AKA whipping boy but I think he will be staying put
And the soap opera of the Leafs continue. So much has happened with this franchise since Quinn has left.....don't get me wrong, I'm not feeling sorry for the teams fans nor am I basking in their negative emotions...well, I'm sure there's quite a few of you out there that feel that these moves have been necessary to get an actual re-building going. I think that all these are probably the best moves around the team can make, if they couldn't find any trading partners for the buy-outs.
Take out the old core and start a new one.
With all of this media attention, rumour mongering, and general BS speculation I'm wondering why the guy even wants to stay in Toronto. If I'm McCabe and living through all of this crap then I'd be tempted to sit down with Fletcher and hammer out a deal and location. I'd be saying "Get me outta here!"
Or is that too logical and reasonable? I don't know...
Doing something classless like this would make future UFA's less interested in coming to Toronto. I don't think Toronto would be stupid enough to do this...JFJ is gone.
I don't think that's true at all. They hired Fletcher to do the dirty work. He is temporary. Once his mission is accomplished, they'll find a replacement and most of the negative associations with Fletcher and what he did during his tenure, will follow him right out the door.
I suggested earlier that they should throw McCabe in goal until he waives his NTC. Having said that, I think it's awesome that he didn't waive it even in the face of all of this pressure. Teams give those things out way too often without thinking about what they're doing. We need a few GMs to get burned so that others think twice about handing them out to less-than-franchise players.
The Leafs, especially when run by Cliff Fletcher, will not do such a thing. I think its highly likely that they bench him though, which is their right to do, but they'll never ask a player to stay home ...
