Bertuzzi on waivers : Worth a shot ?

I say no but what do you think :

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=2418...=topStory_main

A few years ago i would have welcomed him with open arms but these days he's just a shadow of his former self both physically (back) and mentally (the "incident")

I would take him on re-entry only. But my guess is that someone else would take their chances on him re-entry before we get a chance to speak.

he would definetly be a presence , a big winger who can probably play with Koivu and higgins , worth a shot at a decent price . Especially if Sundin really signs , he automatically playing with Tanguay right off the bat , habs definetly need some size to stand in front of the net .

He would be very far down the list in my opinion. He may be good but what he has shown in the last 2-3 seasons is that he wont. A change of scenery hasn't helped him and there is nothing telling us that it will.

He's no better than Latendresse at this point. And that's more of an insult to Bertuzzi than it is a compliment to Latendresse.

Then you are crazy....

If you said no to the pre-incident Bertuzzi, you clearly know nothing about hockey.... he was dominant.

Even in his prime ??!? The guy was the best power forward in the league back then and would have been an excellent addition to our team.

These days however.......

Before the "Moore Hit" I was always a big fan of Big Berts. But since then he's not been half the player he was before. Throw in the injuries and he's a definite no.

Not at 4M$ but if no one claim him and he s a UFA, I would take a chance on him. He had a decent year with a defensive team last year (14 goals, 40 points in 68 games), he is a real power forward and he already had a 46 goals 97 points season 5 years ago.

But I know that Gainey won't touch to this guy.

I would take him. $4M is a lot of money.. but for one year? Who cares.

He put up 40 PTs to go along with a +8 rating in just 68 games.

He's still a good enough player to warrant a spot on our 2nd and/or third line.

A. Kostitsyn - Plekanec - Kovalev
Tanguay - Koivu - Bertuzzi
Higgins - Grabovski - S. Kostitsyn
Latendresse - Chipchura - Lapierre

Does it look that bad?

Yep. In one of those "know your Canadiens" videos last year, both Huet and Aebischer named Bertuzzi as the player they most hated playing against. He was a terror in his prime.

One question in mind is that I am not sure if Bertuzzi is good in the new NHL. Some players just can't make the transition. Theodore, Denis, Jason Smith, Derian Hatcher.. a lot of big strong guys ain't built for today's NHL anymore.

That's a weird answer considering during his prime he was the probably one of the best if not the best power forward in the league. He also had some of the best stick handling skills I've ever seen for a big man.

Agreed!

That's what's so sad about this situation...

A player who was highly respected, feared and desired (as being on your team)...

As glib as this may sound (and it's certainly not meant to be)... when our 'heros' fall, how quickly they get stomped. Reading a few comments on this thread, there it is again.

I'll likely get responses like "Bertuzzi was never my hero" but that's not what I meant. He was a hockey hero for a while. CBC or NHL TV ads featured him knocking players from one TV set through another and out of the screen of a third (I think...)

He was a hockey hero and now, he's treated like a zero - worthless by some of us...

It's sad...

Theodore had an amazing bounce back year last year..

And Jason Smith is still a fine top-4 defenseman.

Gainey resurrected Kovalev. I wouldn't write Bertuzzi off just yet.

The timing isn't right. We need to keep that $4M to try to sign less risky impact players on July 1st.

Maybe on July 5th if we were down to Plan D options again, and we were sitting with scads of unused cap space, it might be worth gambling on Bertuzzi rediscovering his mojo. He only has 1 year left, it couldn't hurt too much even if he bombs. But that's not the timeline this waiving is on, so it's a moot point.

I can't speak for everyone, but for me he's not worthless. He's just not in my opinion a good fit for the Habs at 4m per year. IF he were to be available to us on re-entry, Big Bert at 2m I would consider.
