I found this interesting in today's Vancouver Province. Don't know how much anyone cares if this pending Rangers free agent stays or goes, but it appears that the Canucks might be interested in signing goaltender Steve Valiquette.

Quote:
Call one agent to check on the contract status of a Canuck and he offers up goaltender Stephen Valiquette of the New York Rangers being Vancouver bound to replace Curtis Sanford as the backup to Roberto Luongo. This is based on the fact that Valiquette was a client of Gillis, a former prominent player agent.
Should the Rangers try to keep him? Should they allow him to sign with Vancouver or another team? Or should they let him go because they have better candidate to fill the backup role for Henrik Lundqvist?

Vancouver Province's sports page (June 29):

yeah theres a few topics around here already about that.

im a big Vally fan, but i dont think he makes or breaks this team by any stretch of the imagination.

if he wants mroe than 750k, he can leave.

Oh damn, sorry about that. I should've looked farther down the page list. My bad.

If the moderators want to merge this with the appropriate thread about Valiquette, please feel free.

I do wonder what will happen with the backup goaltending situation given that much of the focus seems to be on Jaromir Jagr and Sean Avery lately.

We need to keep the 'quette in net. He's the best backup this team has had since Glenn Healy.

There are some good back-ups this summer. Dubliwicz, Heberg, etc.

Dubielewicz already signed in Russia, and I believe Atlanta resigned Hedberg only a week or two ago.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but Valiquette is a UFA in less than 24 hours.

Yeah, he's not that desirable, but given he had a good season could the Rangers be outbid?

Are the Rangers looking to sign another more experienced backup?

We all know Henrik can play 70 games, it might not make a difference who it is - but this has kinda slipped under the radar.

Given the Rangers last ditch effort to get in on the Cujo sweepstakes at around the deadline, I think this is the case.

I would rather go with Joseph considering his veteran presence would really help Lundqvist and having one of the better goalies of our time behind him will make me feel alot more comfortable.

I kind of doubt it. He's cheap, has a good rapport with Lundy, and is one of those good locker room guys. He has no real dreams of being a starter, and is a coaches dream. He'll be back for ~$800k is my guess.

i dont know about that, i think every goalie's dream is to start for a team. i doubt he would settle for a backup if a gm would give him a starting job elsewhere.

I'd like to see one of Wiikman or LeNeveu win the bakup role out of camp... preferably Wiikman.

That's the point, he won't get a starting job offer. Not with Emery, Huet, and Kolzig on the market. He's career back-up and by all accounts seems content to play that role at least with the Rangers.

And certainly not in Vancouver.

Ugh, not really true. Every season there must be 30 backups. What team is going to give him a starting job when guys like Esche, Grahame, Aebischer, Dubielewicz, who are all better than Vally, couldn't find a job and have all fled overseas? If anything I see Vally following the growing Europe trend rather than the rare occurrence of a backup turning into a starter.

Vally certainly exceeding my expectations, but the question is how much is willing to resign for.

We could talk all day about how we'd like to have him back, but at the end of the day he's free to go where HE wants.
