How is 7 years and $32 million considered over paying? That's less per year then other comparative players (points-wise)

I will always wonder, until next season if he was a product of playing w/ Malkin. He is a consistent 20 goal scorer though... So who really knows?

I am not turned off by the $$, but by the legnth. If his numbers drop off the last 2years of that contract (which is possible), he will have handcuffed the team in a big way.

Points-wise, I guess Anson Carter wasn't overpaid either.

It all depends on which Malone shows up.

If the Malone who took two broken noses in the SCF and never missed a shift, who was battling for his teammates every night, who was skating with passion and intensity, the Malone that showed up this past season? This might be a decent contract.

If the Malone who was threatened with trade rumors and benching, who showed little effort or drive, skated as if he was moving through mashed potatoes, not on ice, then this is a very very bad deal.

Part of his success was that he was on a line with either Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin for most of the last two seasons. Of course, he also had 22 goals in his rookie season, without those two around. The question really comes up as to his maturity...has he come into his own, growing as a player, and that is why he had such a good season last year? Or was his play more related to the fact that he knew he'd have a big paycheck waiting for him come July?

I, for one, don't like the deal, and am glad neither of my teams (Pens or Jackets) gave him anything close to it.

Could be, but we have to sign someone one would think. There will be a big push to get Morrison, and I'm thinking he would love to be paired with Nash. It's a win/win for both players.

We lost Malone, if we lose Morrison as well I'll be concerned. Remember, the number one problem with this team for over two years running now is a veteran center for Rick Nash. Howson must do everything possible to get us that veteran center.

After that, turn to the defense..

Edit: in retrospect, this thread is now moot. Move on.

It'll be interesting to see how he plays with Stamkos on the 2nd line (assuming that's how it goes).

How much do we have to spend to get to the floor?

About $20 million, and with Liles, Malone, etc gone, we're gonna have to give big bucks to questionable players.

My point exactly.
Everyone keeps talking about not wanting to overpay. If we don't overpay for quality, we are going to overpay in a bigger way for semi-quality.

One of Hossa or Campbell isn't starting to look so bad if as many people get locked up tomorrow as they have today. I'd rather pay Campbell 8 million than have our blueline consist of only Commodore and Streit.

I'd rather pay him 12 million at this point.

Ya know, I would agree to that too. It's better to get to the cap floor with Campbell than Morrison and Jeff Finger.

Maybe you were exaggerating with 12, but seriously, I agree whole-heartedly with your point. Just seriously overpay the **** out of him, or someone, they cant say no.. right?

There's always an element of truth to my exaggerations.

Aren't all exaggerations just the truth stretched a bit?

A few days ago I would have agreed, after the Malone deal I'm not sure anymore. This is one issue I'm surf sailing on, as of today I'm really wondering if bushels of cash is enough to convince top fight NHL players to come here.

In the end I don't think it's the city or the fans but probably 60% seven years of losing, 20% Hitchcock and 20% being a new NHL organization.

One thing I do know, players will never change their minds about coming here if we keep losing. Who in their right mind want to be depressed every game night-not any that I know of. We must start kicking some butt on the ice-soon.
