why would they buy him out? since they so tight against the cap wouldn't it be better just to let him rot in the minors?

They're doing the guy a favor. He'd be an NHL player on a bunch of NHL teams. I wish him the best, I always liked him.

Why would they do him a favor at the expense of 700K in cap space for the next two seasons? It doesn't make any sense to buy him out unless Rathje is counting against the cap right now, Hatcher is going to retire/head to LTIR, and the Flyers don't want 9.1 mil in dead cap space over the summer (that number would still be too high at 7.7 mil though, which makes this impossible to comprehend).

This gets his $2.2 million off the offseason cap+10%, doesn't it? Maybe Holmgren has a signing for tomorrow and he would have been pushing the $62.37 million limit? Gauthier and Rathje are counting against that. A defenseman and/or 4th line center, possibly?

this might not be for a buyout. they might just be giving other teams the chance to acquire him for free and give gauthier a chance to play.

i dont think Homer is buying him out, the deadline is today

he's putting him on waivers to allow any team to claim him for free. if i'm not mistaken re-entry waivers dont come into effect until later (september?) so if he isnt claimed he'll be brought up to the Flyers again, then palced on waivers again before the season starts to give a team another chance to claim him and if he isnt claimed he'll probably play in the AHL again
