Sweet contract for a really useful player. Nice work by Buffalo. He would have been a UFA next summer.

I love his game, but $2.3 a year seems a bit high. Still, good job by Buffalo in keeping him.

2.5 seems a little high but then again you are locked in at that price for 3 years which may be a bargain down the road. Happy to see the goose is sticking around.

Might seem high now, but will likely be a bargain a couple seasons from now.

About what I expected. I'm a big Goose fan and hey, if he gets 14 more points this year he's on pace with Malone.

If you can skate for more than 10 minutes a game and know how to tie your skate laces by yourself you're pretty much guaranteed to make close to 2 Million a year.

Good deal for a very good player. Lots of intangibles. Reminds me a lot of Joel Otto, and IMO he's a darkhorse for the 2010 U.S. Olympic Team.

can the NHL support EVERY player with this type of contract?

if i had nickle for everytime someone said the above, id be mortgage free.

i like Gaustad, but does he bring anything more than most bubble players? Could he have not been replaced at the entry level rate instead of commiting almost 10million to him?

No he couldn't have

He is a 3rd line center (his first season in that role) that improved in all categories. Led the team in hits, faceoffs and can handle himself in a fight. He will only get better next year.

He is not a bubble player he is a glue player.

ok fair enough, i like the player ..

BUT ... my point remains ... 1 year as a third line C and he gets 10million? i just dont get this strategy anymore ... its not hard to find guys like Gaustad in the NHL, is it?

It's not like he's making $10 million per season. $2 million per season isn't a lot at all for a good third line center anymore. There are many more third line centers in the league that are making more money and are less productive than Gaustad.

That's today's NHL. Gaustad has improved every season to the point where he's a third-line center who's very good defensively, top notch in faceoffs and among the league's leading hitters. Once Chris Kelly signed his $2-plus million pact with Ottawa a few weeks ago, the writing was on the wall for Goose. This is a fair deal for both sides.

A guy that plays the PK, PP, takes all the important draws, hits, fights, sticks up for his teammates, provides vocal leadership, always works hard, and plays a regular shift on the 3rd line?

Yeah, easy to replace...

He is making 2.3 average. Why is that a big deal? You keep trying to be inflamatory be saying 10mil. His deal is 9.2mil over 4 yrs, 1.7 then 2.5mil the next 3 seasons. Those are UFA years the team is buying. Thats how the system works.

He is 11th on the Sabres in terms of the average of his cap hit (2.3 million). You may want to get a better understandig of the economics of the game and where salaries are. Because Gaustads his hardly out of whack.

Gaustad is 6'5" 225lbs. he plays 17+mins a night ( 5th among Sabre forwards) and gets PK and PP duty. He was 6th on the Sabres in assists, is the top faceoff guy, will defend teammates, leads the team in hits with 199 hits.

I hardly think the contract he got is out of whack with the various things he brings to the table.

Have you watched him play or are you making an assumption that he is a 4th liner playing 8-10 minutes a night.

actually, i quite like the player ... just surprised teams are giving up the $$ so easily to players based on fingers crossed results.
